Subnautica 2 Leviathans: Every Confirmed Giant So Far

Subnautica 2 Leviathans: Every Confirmed Giant So Far

Subnautica 2 trades the familiar waters of 4546B for an entirely new alien moon, and with that swap comes a fresh roster of Leviathan-class creatures. A handful have been confirmed so far through trailers, developer vlogs, and direct in-game encounters during early access, ranging from squid-shaped apex predators to a dormant titan visible above the waterline.

🐙
Quick answer: Five Leviathans are currently confirmed in Subnautica 2: the Collector, Shiver, Deepwing Brooder, Great Jaw, and the World Tree. None of the original game's Leviathans return as living creatures, though a Reaper statue exists as base decor.

Every confirmed Leviathan in Subnautica 2

Five distinct Leviathans have been identified between official developer reveals and in-game spotting during the early access build. Behavior ranges from aggressive pack hunters to passive, almost scenic giants.

Collector Leviathan

The Collector is the most documented of the bunch and the first Leviathan Unknown Worlds walked through publicly, with a dev vlog covering its design from concept thumbnails to a finished in-game asset. It looks like a massive squid or octopus pulled out of Lovecraft, with four tentacles built to grab, crush, and swat anything that gets close.

Encounters happen in the Outer Bounds and Sparse Plains biomes, with sightings also reported in the Graveyard and Root Canyon. The creature roams alone and is highly reactive, constantly re-evaluating its target. Once it sees you, it gives chase, and its size makes it the largest active predator in the early access build.

It also broadcasts its mood through clear audio cues, which gives you a window to back off before things escalate. Putting roughly 45,000 units between you and the creature is enough for it to lose interest and despawn. It can be scanned, so a careful approach is worth the risk if you want the data entry.

Shiver Leviathan

Shiver Leviathans are bony, fish-shaped predators with protruding skull plates and pointed fins that work as stabbing weapons. They hunt in packs and exhibit clear sexual dimorphism, with females noticeably larger than males. Both variants can be scanned.

You'll run into them in the Void, also referred to as the Dead Zones, the same out-of-bounds region of the map where base building is disabled. Entering Shiver territory is essentially a death sentence on most builds since the pack will surround you within seconds and can one-shot a player. Treat any trip out there as a scan-and-flee mission.

Deepwing Brooder Leviathan

The Deepwing Brooder is the most elusive entry on the list. Unlike the Collector or Shiver, it's docile and doesn't engage the player. Spotting one is the hard part since they can appear anywhere on the map rather than being tied to a single biome.

When you do find them, they travel in packs and release clusters of eggs as they move. The name itself suggests parental behavior, so there's a fair chance that approaching the eggs or the group too aggressively triggers a different response, though nothing about that is confirmed yet.

Great Jaw Leviathan

The Great Jaw is a stationary Leviathan shaped like a giant clam. It doesn't patrol or chase, which makes it more of an environmental hazard than an active predator. The danger is in getting curious and swimming into its open shell.

If a player enters the cavity, the appendages close and trap them inside, and the creature releases toxins into the sealed space. Staying outside the shell appears to be entirely safe, so awareness is the only real defense. An exact biome location hasn't been pinned down yet.

The World Tree

The World Tree is a titan-class Leviathan, and the largest creature confirmed in Subnautica 2 so far. It's dormant rather than active, so it poses no immediate threat. You can spot it on the horizon by surfacing from the depths and looking northeast of your starting lifepod.

Scan reports tie it to multiple points across the map, and its full role appears to be locked behind story progression. Expect it to become more relevant as the early access roadmap expands.

Are any original Subnautica Leviathans returning?

No. Subnautica 2 is set on an entirely different moon, and the ecosystem is built from scratch. Reapers, Ghosts, Sea Dragons, Chelicerates, and Shadow Leviathans don't appear as living creatures on this new world. The closest nod to the original game is a Reaper Leviathan statue available as a base decoration, which is purely cosmetic.

⚠️
Note: Subnautica 2 is in early access, and Unknown Worlds has confirmed that additional biomes and creatures are planned across the development cycle. Expect the Leviathan roster to grow as new zones open up.

For now, the five confirmed giants cover the full spread of Leviathan archetypes the series is known for: an aggressive solo apex, a deadly pack predator, a passive herd creature, a passive-but-lethal trap, and a dormant titan tied to the story. If you're heading into the deeper biomes for the first time, prioritize scans on the Collector and Shiver since both reward careful play, and keep your distance from anything that looks like a clam with teeth.
