Gnome is the earth spirit in Tales of Eternia Remastered. It is one of the Greater Craymels that Keele and Meredy carry in their Craymel Cages. Like every Greater Craymel, it does not spawn at random. You meet it at a fixed story point, prove your party in a set encounter, and only then does it agree to a pact. After that, it powers earth summons and becomes an ingredient in Fringing.
Quick answer: Follow the main story into Celestia and travel the rail line to the Earth Spirit Rail Station and its cave. Clear the Gnome encounter there, then check a Craymel Cage to confirm the pact.
Gnome location and pact requirements
Gnome sits in the same elemental family as Efreet, Undine, and Sylph, the four classic elements behind the early Craymel Cage combinations. Its pact comes after the party has crossed from Inferia into Celestia, though. That means the story order decides when you can reach it, and there is no shortcut.
| Detail | Gnome |
|---|---|
| Element | Earth |
| Realm | Celestia |
| Location | Earth Spirit Rail Station / Cave |
| Access | Celestian rail transit system |
| How it is earned | Story-bound encounter |
| Opposing element | Wind (Sylph) |
The remaster’s destination markers point to the next story objective, so they keep you on course for the station. If you leave the area before finishing the encounter, you have not lost the pact. You can come back once the story opens travel to that part of Celestia again.

Random battles on the way to a spirit can drain your supplies faster than you expect. The pact encounter itself is a fixed fight, so arrive with full resources. The remastered version also lets you save at any time from the menu, which makes it easy to lock in progress right before the chamber.
- Get your levels high enough to absorb bursts of elemental damage.
- Bring plenty of recovery items and consumables that remove status effects.
- Bring a Spectacles if you want to see a target’s elemental weaknesses.
- Build an active party that covers several elemental weaknesses.
- Set the healers in your support roles to heal automatically when party HP falls low.

Story scenes and downtime break up the route through Celestia. Use those quiet stretches to restock and save rather than walking into the cave with a drained party.

Earning the Gnome pact

Gnome’s Vitality gauge and summon rules
Each Greater Craymel tracks two values. Vitality is the yellow gauge that controls summoning. Experience controls the spirit’s level. For Gnome, Vitality follows a few fixed rules.
- Earth attacks from the party fill Gnome’s Vitality during battle.
- Wind attacks fill Sylph and drain Gnome, because earth and wind oppose each other.
- When the gauge reads “Vitality Max!”, you can trigger Gnome’s full-screen summon.
- Once summoned, it leaves the Vitality bar at zero.
- Moving Gnome between Keele’s and Meredy’s cages removes part of its stored Vitality.
Summon damage does not grow with weapon stats, caster level, or Craymel level. Each hit tick deals a fixed base amount. The only thing that changes it is the target’s relationship to the summon’s element. Against an enemy weak to that element, the damage per tick can double. To get the most out of Gnome’s summon, save it for targets that are weak to earth.
If you lean on Sylph’s wind spells in the same fight, Gnome’s gauge drains. Pick one of the two to build up in each battle.
Gnome in Fringing and cage placement
Gnome gains levels from battles and from booster items such as Fragments. Higher levels make its spells stronger. They also unlock new magic in the Fringing option, the third entry in the Craymel Cage menu. Fringing combines the elements of two or more contracted spirits once each reaches its required level, and that creates new spells.
Which cage holds Gnome matters. A caster can only use a spell when every Greater Craymel that spell needs is in that caster’s own cage. Splitting the required spirits between Keele and Meredy locks the spell for both of them. Some higher-tier spells can also trigger Extensions in battle, which turns them into a larger effect when the right conditions are met.

How to confirm the Gnome pact worked
Open the Craymel Cage menu after the encounter. Gnome should be listed in Keele’s or Meredy’s cage with its own Vitality gauge and Experience value. You can also open Fringing and look for new earth-based combinations once Gnome and its partner spirits reach their level thresholds. In battle, Gnome’s yellow gauge should rise when the party uses earth attacks and fall when it uses wind. That behavior confirms the spirit is active in your cage.
