Tanned Leather in Windrose: Crafting recipe and unlock path

Tanned Leather is a tailoring material in Windrose, produced at a Tanning Rack by combining Rough Hide with Tannin. Getting it going requires the right station, a short progression milestone, and a detour through the Alchemy Table for the tannin component.

Quick answer: Craft Tanned Leather at a Tanning Rack using 3 Rough Hide + 1 Tannin. The craft takes about 45 seconds, and the rack must be placed within range of a Bonfire.

Tanned Leather recipe and craft time

Each piece of Tanned Leather consumes 3 Rough Hide and 1 Tannin, and finishes after roughly 45 seconds at the Tanning Rack. The rack only functions when placed inside the radius of a Bonfire, so set it down near your existing camp rather than out in the field.

Unlocking the Tanning Rack

The Tanning Rack recipe becomes available once you have Tree Bark in your possession, which teaches the schematic the first time you pick it up. Tree Bark itself only drops in the Foothills, a region that opens after you defeat the first boss and leave the starting area behind.

Building the rack costs 10 Wood and 5 Rope, and placement takes about a second. Keep it inside your Bonfire’s range, or the station will sit idle when you try to queue a craft.

Getting Tannin from the Alchemy Table

Tannin is the chemical agent that converts Rough Hide into leather, and it is produced at a Level 1 Alchemy Table. The Alchemy Table is built from the crafting and utilities menu under the alchemy category.

Step 1: Build the Alchemy Table and a supply of Clay Bottles. Clay Bottles are the reusable container the recipe draws from, so batch a handful before you start.

Step 2: Gather Tree Bark from the Foothills. The same harvesting method used for hardwood applies to bark, so any tree-felling route in that zone will stock both materials.

Step 3: At the Alchemy Table, craft Tannin using 1 Clay Bottle and 2 Tree Bark per unit. Queue as many as the Rough Hide stockpile will support.

Sourcing Rough Hide

Early on, Rough Hide comes from hunting animals on the starting islands. Boars are the most reliable target, but wolves and goats drop it as well. Swing through their spawn zones between crafting runs, and the hide count climbs quickly.

Later in the main quest, you reach Tortuga and can buy the Merchant Contract: Animal Products. The base contract only delivers low-tier goods like meat and feathers, but after you finish the Coastal Jungle storyline and defeat its boss, the contract upgrades to include Rough Hide, Boar Tusks, and Animal Fat. That turns the contract into a passive hide stream on top of manual hunting.

Common reasons the craft fails to start

  • The Tanning Rack is placed outside the Bonfire radius and shows as inactive.
  • You have Rough Hide but no Tannin, or vice versa, so the recipe stays greyed out.
  • You haven’t reached the Foothills yet, meaning neither the rack recipe nor Tree Bark is accessible.

Once a piece finishes, Tanned Leather appears in the rack’s output slot and can be pulled into your inventory for use at tailoring stations. From there, it feeds directly into upgraded clothing and armor recipes as you push deeper into the mid-game.
