Terraria: How to Get the Pirate NPC

Clear one full Pirate Invasion and keep a spare house open, and the Pirate merchant moves in for good.

Clear one full Pirate Invasion and keep a spare house open, and the Pirate merchant moves in for good.

The Pirate is a Hardmode town NPC in Terraria who sells cannons, sails, and other pirate-themed goods once he settles into your town. Getting him is less about luck and more about clearing one specific event, then having a room ready for him.

Quick answer: Defeat one complete Pirate Invasion in a Hardmode world, and make sure a vacant, valid house is available. The Pirate moves in on his own shortly after the event ends.

Requirements before the Pirate can appear

The Pirate is tied to the Pirate Invasion event, which only exists in Hardmode. Before any invasion can start or be summoned, your world and character need to meet a few conditions.

RequirementDetails
Hardmode activeThe Wall of Flesh must be defeated to enter Hardmode.
Altar destroyedAt least one Demon Altar or Crimson Altar must be broken.
Max healthYour character needs at least 200 maximum health. Without it, a Pirate Map will not work.
Vacant houseA valid, empty house must be ready for the Pirate to move into.

Start a Pirate Invasion with a Pirate Map

The most reliable way to trigger the event is to summon it yourself using a Pirate Map. This consumable item summons a Pirate Invasion on demand, so you don’t have to wait for a random one to appear.

Head to the Ocean biome at the far left or right edge of your map. In Hardmode, any enemy killed within or close to the Ocean has a 1% (1/100) chance to drop a Pirate Map.

Farm the drop faster by boosting enemy spawns. Hover just above the Ocean water using Water Walking Boots or a small platform, then use a Water Candle and a Battle Potion to raise the spawn rate. Minions clearing enemies for you speed things up further.
Use the Pirate Map from your hotbar or inventory. The message “A pirate invasion is approaching!” confirms the event has begun.

Note: A Pirate Invasion can also start on its own if the same conditions are met and no other event is currently in progress. A summoned map removes the guesswork.

Clear the invasion to unlock the Pirate

Only a fully defeated invasion counts toward getting the NPC. In a single-player game, you need to kill 120 pirates to finish the event, and that number rises with each additional player.

The invasion spawns at your world spawn point (which must be on-screen) or wherever at least one NPC is on-screen. That means you can fight it in a prepared arena instead of defending your town, as long as you keep an NPC nearby to anchor the spawns.

Once you clear about 65% of the invasion, the Flying Dutchman mini-boss appears in the sky with 8,000 health. Bring it down along with the remaining pirates to push the progress bar to 100%.

How to confirm the Pirate moved in

When the last enemy falls, the message “The pirates have been defeated!” appears. With a vacant house waiting, the Pirate will then arrive, shown by his own “has arrived!” message and a housing banner marked with a pirate hat icon in the room he claims.

Tip: Lying down in a bed to speed up in-game time increases how quickly NPCs move into open housing after the event ends. His texture closely matches the Pirate Captain enemy, so check the housing menu if you want to confirm the merchant, not the enemy, has settled in.

Why the Pirate won’t appear

If the merchant never shows up, one of these conditions is usually the cause.

  • The invasion was not fully cleared. Only a completed event counts, so leaving stragglers alive resets your progress toward the NPC.
  • No vacant house is available. The Pirate needs an empty, valid room to occupy.
  • Your character has under 200 maximum health, which also stops a Pirate Map from working at all.
  • You are still in pre-Hardmode. The event and NPC only exist after the Wall of Flesh is beaten.

Once he settles in, the Pirate stays available like any other town NPC, and you’ll never need to repeat the invasion to keep him. Future Pirate Invasions then become a source of loot rather than a requirement.
