The Blood of Dawnwalker: Does the Mass Choice Between Silence and “This Is Sick” Matter?

Both replies during Brencis's Blood Mass lead to the same outcome, with no story branch tied to Coen's response.

Both replies during Brencis’s Blood Mass lead to the same outcome, with no story branch tied to Coen’s response.

During the Blood Mass in The Blood of Dawnwalker, Coen faces a timed prompt after Father Florin’s speech. You can pick “This is sick” or stay quiet. The decision looks weighty in the moment, but it has no lasting effect on how events unfold.

Quick answer: Choose either option. Neither “This is sick” nor remaining silent changes the story, quests, or your standing in Vale Sangora.

What each Mass choice does

There are two moments where the game asks for a response during the ritual. The first comes after Florin finishes speaking, and the second is when the congregation recites its closing line. Both are cosmetic.

PromptOptionsResult
After Florin’s speech“This is sick.” / [remain silent]Saying “This is sick” makes Pieter scold Coen for drawing attention. Staying silent triggers nothing.
Closing recitation“May it forever endure.” / [remain silent]No change either way.

The only visible difference is Pieter’s brief reaction if you speak up. That line of dialogue does not carry forward, and it does not alter any relationship or quest.

Why the choice has no consequence

The Mass is a fixed story beat. Coen, now an adult, is required to attend, and the sequence plays out the same regardless of his answer. The narrative is heading toward showing you what kind of ruler Brencis truly is for Vale Sangora, and your words in the pews do not steer that.

This is worth knowing because many decisions elsewhere in the game do matter. The choices you make as a Dawnwalker can shape the fate of the valley. The Mass reply is simply not one of them.

How the Blood Mass works

Every adult over 18 must attend the Mass. Because it is restricted to adults, Coen’s younger siblings, Yanna, Mirto, and Lunka, stay home and skip the ritual entirely.

The gathering centers on a blood exchange with the Knyaz and his Boyars. Villagers drink Brencis’s blood, which heals wounds and physical illness. In return, they give some of their own blood for the Vrakhir to consume. The vampires need human blood periodically even if animal blood sustains them for a time, so the ritual is framed as a mutual trade.

Note: Vrakhir blood does not cure mental illness, which is why it cannot resolve Esme’s neurological condition. Only physical ailments respond to it.

Brencis has genuinely wiped out the plague and removed the previous tyrant from power. His deeper aims, however, are far from benevolent, and the Mass is part of how he keeps the valley under control while presenting a gentler face.

So pick whichever line fits how you want to roleplay Coen. Speak out if you want the small character moment, or stay silent to keep his head down. The story continues on the same track either way, leaving your real influence for the decisions that come later.
