The Master-tier recipe sits in a chest inside a mountain cave west of Rockfalls, alongside two other pickups.

Balm of Fortitude is one of the more useful utility potions in The Blood of Dawnwalker, cutting incoming physical damage by 15 percent for both Coen’s day and night forms. The mid-tier version is not sold by any of the medics or merchants scattered around Vale Sangora, so the only way to add it to your crafting panel is to go and pull it out of a chest.

Quick answer: The Recipe for Balm of Fortitude is inside a cave in the mountains west of Rockfalls. Loot the wooden chest sitting beside the lit brazier on the left-hand side of the cave interior.

Recipe for Balm of Fortitude location: cave west of Rockfalls

The cave is easy to miss because nothing on the surface marks it. It sits above the road in rocky terrain, and the entrance is a plain stone arch flanked by two small statues. There is no quest attached to it and no lock on the container.

Open the world map and pan west from Rockfalls until the mountains fill the screen. Zoom in on the slope and drop a custom marker on the cave entrance so you have something to navigate toward once you are back in the world.

Travel to the marker and climb the rocky path up the mountainside. The approach is a short scramble on foot, and the stone entrance becomes visible once you are near the top.
Walk into the cave, past the pair of small statues at the mouth. The interior is dark, but a brazier is burning further in and acts as your landmark.
Head to the wooden chest on the left side of the cave, right next to that brazier, and interact with it. The prompt on this container reads Steal rather than Open, but there is nobody around to react to it.

What the chest contains

The loot window lists three items. Take all of them, since the other two are worth carrying out either as a healing item or as vendor fodder.

How to confirm the recipe unlocked

Recipes in The Blood of Dawnwalker unlock the moment you pick them up, so there is no separate “read” or “learn” action to perform. Open the inventory on the All items tab and look for the Recipe for Balm of Fortitude entry, which is colour-coded as a Master item.

The definitive check is the crafting panel itself. Balm of Fortitude should now appear under the Utility category with its ingredient list shown, greyed out only if you are short on materials.

Balm of Fortitude ingredients and effect

Getting the recipe is only half the job. The mid-tier brew leans on Boar Tusks, which means hunting boars rather than picking herbs, and Green-Gilled Mushroom, which is the same mushroom used by Revitalising Tonic.

CategoryUtility
Effect+15% Physical Damage Reduction
Ingredients1 Linseed Oil, 3 Green-Gilled Mushroom, 3 Boar Tusks

Crafting works the same way as every other consumable. Open the crafting panel, highlight the entry, then hold the craft input until the bar fills. Effects from crafted consumables are not reduced during combat, unlike food, which is why the balm is worth keeping stocked before a boss or a camp clear.

Minor, standard, and Potent Balm of Fortitude compared

Three versions of the balm exist, and only the middle one requires the cave trip. If you want the stronger variant early, the Silberstein Medic in Svartrau City sells it outright.

VersionEffectIngredients
Minor Balm of Fortitude+10% Physical Damage Reduction1 Vial of Animal Blood, 3 Yellow Sweet Clover, 3 Comfrey
Balm of Fortitude+15% Physical Damage Reduction1 Linseed Oil, 3 Green-Gilled Mushroom, 3 Boar Tusks
Potent Balm of Fortitude+20% Physical Damage Reduction1 Mercurial Water, 2 Chanterelle, 1 Cave Fungus, 1 Bear Liver

The Potent recipe is stocked by the Medic southeast of the Silberstein Shrine in Svartrau City and can be consumed at any time of day, though its Mercurial Water and Bear Liver requirements make it far more expensive to actually brew than the version you just picked up.

Since recipes stay unlocked permanently once collected, the cave is a single visit with no follow-up. Grab the balm recipe on your way through the region, keep a few Boar Tusks in reserve from any boar you take down, and you will have a damage-reduction buff ready whenever a fight starts going badly.
