First Roots hands you an empty circular platform in the middle of the ocean and expects a working greenhouse. It is the next stage of Project Eden, and unlike most quests in The Last Caretaker, nothing on site is pre-built. You supply the frame, the power, the water, the soil, and the seed.
Quick answer: Build Eden Frame – Small on the Pizhuin platform, snap on an Eden Tile – Pillar – Farming Bed, wire power and purified water into the frame, fill the plot with Bio Waste, then drop an Orchard Seed.
Where First Roots takes you and what the platform already has
The quest objective is short: sail to the Eden platform and build the first Eden frame. The marker appears as a new point of interest east of the Lazarus Complex, in the water northeast of the Last Listener Station, and shows up in the HUD as EDEN PLATFORM PIZHUIN (some in-game text renders it as Pishon).
What you find there is a bare round foundation with a ladder. Once the frame is standing, the structure includes a built-in raw WATER PUMP on the lower level with a salt water output, plus EDEN FRAME MODULE sockets on the central column for fresh water and electricity. The frame will not accept salt water directly, which is the single most important constraint of the whole build.
- Eden Frame Module needs both an electricity feed and a fresh water feed.
- The platform’s Water Pump arrives unpowered and outputs salt water only.
- A Water Purifier must sit between the pump and the frame.
- Once fresh water reaches the frame, the farming bed waters itself.
Materials to craft before you sail to Pizhuin
Everything here is fabricated on the boat and carried over in your inventory, so a half-loaded trip means a second crossing. Queue the full list at the fabricator first.

Exact counts have shifted between updates. The frame has been listed at both 15 and 50 Stainless Steel, with the farming bed asking for 8 or 15. Open the blueprint on your own save, right-click it, and use the option to add missing items to the queue rather than trusting a fixed number.
Stainless Steel is the real bottleneck. Each unit costs 1 Iron plus 10 L of oil and power at the fabricator, so a 50-steel frame burns 50 Iron and 500 L of oil before you touch any of the smaller parts. Run an orange fuel cable from the boat’s oil tank to the fabricator, and refill from the Black Vein Oil Rig or a Recovery Grinder if the tank runs dry.
The Water Purifier is a skill unlock. Check the Skills menu and spend the points before the trip, otherwise the blueprint will not appear in your Build tab at Pizhuin.
Build the Eden Frame and the farming bed
Wire power and fresh water into the Eden Frame Module
When the bed continues to register as dry, inspect the hose path: it should run from the pump, pass through the purifier, and end at the module socket. A nearby purifier with no connection appears exactly like a functioning unit.
Fill the plot with Bio Waste and plant an Orchard Seed
The farming bed has a square recess with nothing in it. Soil is made by physically dropping organic material into that hole from your inventory until it fills with dirt.
Bio Waste is the reliable filler, and Bio Organic works as well. If you are short, dive off the platform with a flashlight on. The light draws out the glowing organism swarms underwater, and killing them drops Bio Waste. Bring a few stacks, because the recess takes several drops before soil forms.
With the bed filled, drop the seed directly onto the soil. It has to be a genuine plantable item classed as organic or seed, such as an Orchard Seed or Orchard Pear Tree sapling. Decorative trees tagged ITEM / MEMORY will not root no matter how good the plot is.
Orchard Seeds come from the reward pod you claim after sending a human to space, and they turn up as a rare drop at some points of interest.
How to confirm First Roots is complete
The seed sinks into the soil and immediately begins rooting, the subtitle Growth process started plays, and the caretaker voice notes that Pizhuin’s purpose will be revealed in time. That is the completion trigger. Stay on the platform until you see the sapling take hold rather than sailing off the moment the last item goes in.
Finishing the quest also unlocks more Eden tiles, ramps, and stairs in the Build menu, all of which cost further Stainless Steel, and it opens the follow-up quest THE FORBIDDEN FRUIT. Its objectives run in this order:
- Wait for the tree to grow.
- Harvest the pears from the tree.
- Launch the rocket and deliver the pears to space.
- Wait for the reward pod to land, sit in it, and claim it.
Pizhuin is one thread of Project Eden, the same program behind the Eden Cradle facility and its Seed Chambers, so the seed stock and the platform builds keep feeding into each other as the chain continues.
The frame is also designed to expand, so anything you add later snaps onto the same four arms. Keep a steel and oil buffer on the boat and the second farming bed costs one trip instead of three.
