The Underpass Fault is the last of Jesse’s three Fault quests in Control Resonant, and it sits in the middle of the game’s most confusing stretch of progression. Dylan gets the objective early, tries to walk toward the vision of Jesse, and hits a wall that no amount of platforming will solve. The quest only becomes completable after another Fault is cleared, and until it is finished, the main story mission The House in Distress stays locked.
Quick answer: Clear The Subway Fault first, fast travel to The Spire, glide to the island of orange pipes, enter the Fault, work through the memory prompts, guide both light-projected children together, then finish Jesse’s ritual.
Why The Underpass Fault soft-blocks during Recursions and Iterations
The quest appears while Dylan is following the research team through the Underpass during Recursions and Iterations. Once you reach the island where both the beacon and the island of orange pipes are visible, a vision of Jesse shows up in the distance and the objective “Investigate the Vision of Jesse on the Island of Orange Pipes” lands in the log.
Chasing it immediately does not work. Zoe tells Dylan the jump cannot be made yet, and the actual fix is a different quest entirely. The Fault chain runs in a fixed order, and the Underpass one is always last.
- The Incursion Fault unlocks Shift, which turns walls and rotated surfaces into walkable ground.
- The Subway Fault unlocks Reach, used for gravity anomalies.
- The Underpass Fault closes the chain and releases The House in Distress.

Add to Google Preferences →Clear The Subway Fault in the Evacuation Zone first
This is the detour the game expects. The Board hands Dylan The Subway Fault when he arrives in the Evacuation Zone, and completing it is what makes the Underpass objective solvable.

Route from The Spire to the island of orange pipes
Going back through the Underpass on foot wastes a lot of time. Use a Fast Travel Door, open the world map, and pick The Spire under the Underpass listing. Dylan lands on the rooftop platform looking out over the floating monoliths.

There is a save point near the small entrance on the lower level, so grab it before the mold fight rather than after.
Inside the Fault: every memory interaction in order
The Fault opens on a dark clearing buried in golden autumn leaves, and the objective changes to “Find Jesse and Talk to Her.” Unlike the earlier Faults, this one is built around interaction points rather than combat. White eye icons mark each memory on the monolithic stone faces, and touching them is what moves the quest forward.
| Memory prompt | What the projection shows |
|---|---|
| I remember Mom | Dylan’s mother teaching him to paint |
| I remember Dad | His father taking him camping and hiking |
| We were happy | The whole family together |
| Everything was simple back then | Jesse and Dylan as young children |
| They didn’t recognize us anymore | The parents’ shadows towering over Dylan |
| (Family breakdown) | The father’s anger and drinking, the mother shutting herself away |
| We made a promise | Both children reunited at the Christmas tree |

Between the early memories the path is linear. After the third stone face, a golden humanoid silhouette appears and slips through an opening in the monolith; follow it across the floating leaf-covered slabs suspended over the void until you reach the wall showing the two children together.
How to guide the light-projected children
Once the objective flips to “Guide the Light-Projected Children,” the puzzle logic changes. The silhouettes are painted on the walls and only move when Dylan moves across the physical ledges nearby. You are not pushing them directly; you are choosing which route you take so they advance along the surface you want.
- When the two glowing silhouettes first appear on the wall, take them to the right.
- When the parents’ shadows come into view ahead, do not jump straight toward them — one silhouette is still waiting on the side.
- Take the left path instead, bringing the remaining silhouette across to the parents.
- Keep the silhouette on screen as you move. Jumping around corners breaks the link and it stops following.
Ascending the upper ledges around the edge of the hall is what triggers the children’s movement in the larger chamber. When both shadows reach the towering parents, the “They didn’t recognize us anymore” interaction unlocks, followed by the projection covering the family’s collapse.
Reunite young Dylan and Jesse in the multi-tier room
Follow the silhouette of young Dylan through the tunnel and the objective updates to “Reunite Young Dylan and Jesse.” This room is the trickiest part of the Fault because both figures have to end up in the same place at the same time.
Talk to Jesse and complete the ritual
The final stretch is linear again. Walk down the wooded path to find Jesse standing under a street lamp and talk to her. Dylan’s replies here, including “You were just a kid too,” are dialogue flavor and do not gate anything.
The objective becomes “Help Jesse Complete the Ritual.” A projection plays out the night their mother pointed a rifle at them, after which you run along the glowing, leaf-strewn highway toward the eclipse-like rift. On the far side sits an easel with floating artwork and an illuminated CRT television. Interact with Jesse there, work through the dialogue prompts to the end, and the astral projection dissolves.
Rewards and how to confirm the quest is finished
You will know it worked when Jesse fades out and the on-screen banner reads “QUEST COMPLETED: THE UNDERPASS FAULT.” Two reward notifications land at the same time.
| Reward or effect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Before I Leave | Collectible record added to your log |
| Living Shard | +1 |
| Notes: Jesse Sightings | Completes automatically |
| The House in Distress | Unblocked and playable |
From there, return to the Underpass through The Spire fast travel point and pick Recursions and Iterations back up, starting with the beacon location. If your Quest Log still lists The Underpass Fault as tracked, the ritual dialogue was not carried all the way through, so head back to the easel and finish the conversation.
