Race is the first real build decision in The Veil, and it sticks with you through every run in the labyrinth until you spend a reroll. Each one changes hard numbers — cast damage, resistance, summon health, speed, luck — and a couple hand you an active skill on top. Ten races exist right now, one of them is legendary, and the gap between the top pick and the bottom pick is large enough to feel in a boss fight.

Quick answer: Veilborne is the strongest race, Goblin is the best race you can realistically roll early, and you change races at the Stylist NPC in The Glade using rerolls from codes, daily rewards, the Robux store, or certain quests.

Ranking criteria: how much raw damage or effective health a race adds across a full run, whether the bonus works on every build or only one, and how badly its drawback bites in normal play. This reflects the September 2026 release-window meta, after the day-one balance pass that handed Mushling and Obelite their active skills.

Note: a few race names still appear with alternate spellings in game text and community listings — Veilborne shows up as Whaleborn, Wraith as Rat, and Hiveling as Havling. They are the same races.

Why Veilborne sits alone in S tier

Veilborne rewrites the Weave system rather than bolting a bonus onto it. A shorter stack cap means you hit maximum buff sooner, and the fatter per-stack value pushes the ceiling from +25% to +30% universal damage and speed. Damage and movement both scale with everything you do, so the bonus never sits idle regardless of whether you are casting, meleeing, or summoning.

Nightfall stacks another +10% damage and speed on top for 15 seconds while draining sanity from anyone standing near you, which matters in PvP as much as it does against packs. The +10% insanity is the only real cost, and it is small next to what the passive gives back. The catch is rarity — it is the single legendary race, so most players will spend a lot of rerolls before seeing it.

A tier: the races worth building around

Treat A tier as the practical top of the list. Goblin is the best race a new player can land, since Uncommon odds are generous and the package is genuinely strong — the cast cooldown reduction raises your sustained damage more than the raw numbers suggest, and +20% luck keeps paying out on loot for the entire run.

Underling hits harder per cast with +15% cast damage and adds a defensive layer that Goblin does not have. The +25% fire resistance is close to dead weight in some fights and a hard counter in others, which is the trade for losing the cooldown reduction. Gemhead is narrower still, but for a summoner it is the correct answer: boosting summon health by 15% keeps your minions alive long enough to actually deliver the +10% damage.

B tier: strong under specific conditions

Obelite is the tank pick, and it does the job — Stoneform plus an active Exert Energy window stacks resistance high enough to survive hits that delete other races. It lands below A tier because The Veil’s combat is dodge-based, and a permanent -10% speed with no damage buff works against you late, especially with the regeneration and stamina hangover after the skill ends.

Hiveling is a fine early-to-mid game race thanks to a flat +10% damage that applies at all hours. You can schedule around the day-time resistance loss by farming at night and handling shopping, inventory, and non-combat quests during daylight. The permanent -10% attack speed is the part you cannot play around, and it caps how far the race carries you.

C and D tier: reroll these when you can

Wraith reads better than it plays. A 5% chance to ignore any hit averages out to roughly one free miss every 20 hits taken, and you never get to choose which one. It occasionally saves a boss attempt, but you cannot build a strategy on it.

Human is reliable and completely unremarkable. Extra max HP per Prestige works with every build and never turns off, but by the time the bonus adds up to something meaningful you would rather be running a race that multiplies your damage. Skeleton has a niche if you pick up a summon lantern early, though -10% resistance is a steep price for +10% speed, and Gemhead does the summoner job better without the defensive hole.

Mushling sits at the bottom. Regeneration, healing received, and the Decompose skill make it a passable support option, but sinking into the ground to heal is slow, the stamina regeneration penalty hurts a dodge-heavy game, and there is no offensive value anywhere in the kit.

How to change your race at the Stylist NPC

Races are not permanent. Rerolling happens at a single NPC, and it uses the same interface you saw during character creation.

Load into The Veil and return to The Glade, the spawn town.
Take any ladder up to the upper hub area at the top of the tower. The Stylist prompt appears on your HUD to point you the right way.
Interact with the Stylist. The race reroll screen opens with your current roll and reset counters listed on it.
Spend a roll. Your new race and its effects appear immediately and the counter drops by one. If the screen reads “You have 0 Rolls,” nothing will happen until you claim more.

Rerolls come from four places: code redemptions, daily login rewards, the Robux store, and a handful of quests that reroll your race outright, including Unmake the Shrouded.

Join the BlackstarDW Studios Roblox group before you try to redeem anything. Codes will not register without it.
Launch the game, create a character, and finish the short tutorial so the full HUD is active.
Click the small shop icon underneath the Sanity bar, then select the Codes button or scroll down to the Codes section.

Paste a code into the text field and press Enter. Copy and paste rather than typing, since the codes are case-sensitive. Your reroll counter at the Stylist goes up straight away when it works.

The Veil is only days into its Beta v1.0.0 release, and the balance team has already moved twice — the same patch cycle that gave Mushling and Obelite their active skills can just as easily shuffle these numbers again. Until then, roll toward Goblin or Underling if you cast, Gemhead if you summon, and keep spending free rerolls on the 1% chance at Veilborne.
