CD Projekt Red has committed to a boxed release for The Witcher 4, the studio’s next mainline entry starring Ciri. The complication is timing. The game is targeting a 2028 launch window, which lands in the same year Sony stops making discs for new PlayStation titles. So while a box on a shelf is a promise, the disc inside it is not.

What CD Projekt Red has confirmed about the box
Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski said the studio will “for sure” produce a box, regardless of how the disc situation shakes out. He described it as something with “feelies” inside, meaning physical collectible extras that fans can open and keep.
We’re big fans of people having access to tangible collectible things. We’re nerds ourselves, and we like that. So, whatever is the case, we’re going to be for sure having a box.
Nowakowski was clear about the limit of that promise. CD Projekt Red does not control how first parties manufacture discs. Those discs are made in the platform holders’ own factories, so if Sony stops production, the studio cannot force a PlayStation disc into existence.
Why a PlayStation disc is not guaranteed
Sony announced in July 2026 that it will end disc production for all new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. Titles released before that cutoff are unaffected, but anything launching afterward goes digital. Because The Witcher 4 is aiming for 2028, it sits right on the wrong side of that line.
There is also no confirmation that a PlayStation 6 will even carry a disc drive, and analysis has pointed to a possible PS6 delay toward late 2028. Sony President and CEO Hiroki Totoki has said the company has not decided when it will launch the next console or at what price. That leaves no reliable path for a conventional pressed disc on Sony hardware at launch.
What “code in a box” actually means
Sony CFO Lin Tao told retailers they can still sell “physical editions” after the cutoff, using redeemable vouchers packed inside boxes. These codes grant a digital license to the game rather than shipping the game on media. You get plastic to line your shelf, but the software itself downloads.
This is the same route Rockstar is taking with the GTA 6 physical version. For The Witcher 4, a download code is the most likely way a boxed PlayStation release could exist. Nowakowski’s wording also leaves room for a higher-tier collector’s box that pairs a code with the physical extras, rather than a standard edition sold purely as a code.
