Torchlight: Infinite The Unbound: Permadeath, Move to Cast, and Free Compasses

What the hardcore server changes, how auto-casting works, and what each of the five free Compasses does.

What the hardcore server changes, how auto-casting works, and what each of the five free Compasses does.

The Unbound is a hardcore server in Torchlight: Infinite where a single death permanently retires your character. It runs as a recurring mid-season event tied to the Afterlight season, and it rebuilds the usual gameplay loop around faster clears, looser builds, and heavier risk. Lose the character once and the run is over. There is no revival, no second attempt on that hero.

Quick answer: The Unbound is a permadeath server. Your Main Skill fires automatically while you move, Destiny Installs have no cap, and five Compasses are free but make enemies stronger. Death ends the run for good.

Permadeath is the core rule

One death is the entire allowance. When your character falls on The Unbound, that run ends and the hero is gone. This is the standard definition of permadeath, and it frames every other decision on the server. Every bonus that speeds up progress or improves loot also comes attached to added danger, so you are constantly weighing extra power against the fact that a single mistake wipes the whole run.

The Unbound is a separate place from the regular live server. XD Games treats it as a recurring seasonal event, and there is no promise that any of its mechanics will move to the standard server afterward. If you want to try these systems, you try them here while the event is running.

Move to Cast fires your Main Skill automatically

Unbound – Move to Cast regularly triggers your Main Skill as you move across the battlefield. Because moving no longer forces a break from attacking, you clear maps and gain levels faster. The skill activates as you travel, so simply running through an area produces a steady stream of automatic casts.

Movement skills and channeled skills cannot be triggered this way, but most regular offensive abilities can. The system also interacts with Spell Burst, opening extra skill combinations. Projectile and ranged builds benefit the most, since they can keep firing their main attack while kiting through a map.

Note: faster attacks do not remove the risk. Automatic casting keeps damage flowing, but you are still exposed to the same lethal consequences if you push into a fight you cannot survive.

Unshackled Destiny removes the Destiny Install cap

Unshackled Destiny takes away all limits on Destiny Installs. Normally you can only slot a set number of Destiny and Fate effects, which forces hard choices about which bonuses to keep. With the cap gone, you can stack far more of them and spread builds much wider.

The practical result is more room to prepare for the server’s tougher fights. You can combine bonuses that would not normally fit together, tune a character toward survival, and adapt loadouts to specific bosses and map modifiers. High-end Fates can still be hard to acquire, but the installation restriction is no longer the wall.

The five free Compasses and what they do

The Unbound adds five Compasses, and all of them can be obtained for free. Each one improves a specific piece of endgame content. The catch is consistent across the set: every Compass also strengthens the enemies guarding its rewards, so the payout always comes with a heavier fight.

CompassEffect
Unbound ArcanaRaises the chance of a Tarot Trial after killing an Arcana Boss; each completed Tarot Trial then increases the chance of Secret Paths spawning.
Unbound OverrealmGuarantees your first captured Bottle Shadow in the Overrealm is Red Quality or better.
Unbound OutlawMakes Bonus Supply trigger two additional times in relevant content.
Unbound Dark SurgeGreatly increases the chance that Dark Surge rewards roll as Legendary Gear.
Unbound LunariaGuarantees a Scarlet Moon Incantation boss encounter in Lunaria.

Dark Surge is the clearest draw for gear hunters, since it focuses rewards on Legendary drops. Lunaria’s guaranteed boss summon is attractive for farming, because bosses drop large amounts of loot and progression materials. But with permadeath in play, pushing these Compasses for maximum reward means accepting stronger, more dangerous monsters at the same time.

The trade-off in practice

The Unbound does not simply make everything lethal and wait for players to slip. It hands you faster attacks, wider builds, and better loot, then asks how much of that advantage you are willing to trade for extra danger. On a normal server, hardcore builds favor consistency and survival. Here, the rewards actively encourage taking on more risk, which pushes durable heroes ahead of pure glass cannons.

Torchlight: Infinite is available on PC, iOS, and Android, and you can pick your platform from the official website. Before you commit a character to the server, plan your build with survival in mind, because the moment you look away at the wrong time on The Unbound, the run is finished for good.
