Valheim 1.0: How to Craft the Brew of Animal Whispers

The Brew of Animal Whispers is the only consumable in Valheim that changes how fast taming runs, and it takes ingredients from three different biomes to make. Nothing in the recipe is rare once you have the farms set up, but the first batch means a trip to the Swamp trader and a dig through Mountain chests.

Quick answer: Combine 5 Onions, 10 Carrots, and 1 Pungent Pebbles in a Mead Ketill, then ferment the base for two in-game days. One batch gives you 6 Brews of Animal Whispers.

What the Brew of Animal Whispers does

One serving halves the taming time for all tameable animals within 60 meters. A wolf’s timer, for example, falls from 30 minutes to 15. The in-game wording says, “Tame creatures are more willing to welcome you among their flock,” while the flavor text says it smells like a pigsty.

The multiplier stacks per player. If an animal sits inside the radius of two people who both drank the brew, taming runs at x4, three players make it x8, and so on. It is also teleportable, so you can carry a batch through a portal.

Mead Base: Animal Whispers recipe

Every mead in the game starts as a mead base, and this one is a Mountain-tier item. The base itself is weight 1.0, does not stack, and is useless until it has spent time in a Fermenter.

The Cauldron no longer produces mead bases in Valheim 1.0. If the recipe is missing from your crafting list, you are standing at the wrong station — the Mead Ketill replaced it.

Pungent Pebbles: Buy from the Bog Witch

Pungent Pebbles are sold by the Bog Witch, a trader named Kregk who lives in a hut out in the Swamp. She charges 125 Coins for 5 Pebbles, and since one Pebble makes one mead base, a single purchase covers five batches — 30 finished brews. Buy in bulk on the first visit and the Swamp stops being part of this recipe.

Onion seeds: Loot Mountain chests

Onions only enter your world through Onion Seeds, which drop from chests inside abandoned huts, towers, and stone circles in the Mountain biome. The drop is not guaranteed, so plan on checking several structures. Once you have seeds, plant them with the Cultivator at your main base and never go looking again.

The Mountain applies a constant freezing effect. Wear a Wolf Fur Cape or drink a Frost Resistance Mead before you step onto the snow, or the chest hunt will kill you long before you find seeds.

Carrots: Gather in the Black Forest

Wild carrots grow in the Black Forest and are easy to spot by the small white flowers poking out of the ground. Ten Carrots per batch is the largest single requirement in the recipe, so this is the crop worth planting a big plot of. Carrots and Onions both grow with the Cultivator in the Meadows, Black Forest, and Plains.

Brew it with the Mead Ketill and Fermenter

Set up a Mead Ketill and place it on top of a fire source. It will not open its crafting menu without heat underneath it.

Open the Ketill with the full ingredient list in your inventory and craft Mead base: Animal Whispers. The tooltip on the finished base says “Needs to be fermented,” which is your cue that it is not drinkable yet.

Drop the base into an empty Fermenter. A Fermenter takes one base at a time, so build a second one if you want to run batches back to back.

Wait two in-game days. When the Fermenter finishes, it hands over 6 Brews of Animal Whispers from that single base.

When to drink the Brew of Animal Whispers

The buff works on every tameable creature, including Boars in the Meadows, Wolves in the Mountain, Lox in the Plains, and Asksvins in the Ashlands. Right-click it in your inventory, or slot it on the hotbar and press the matching key.

Taming only progresses while the animal is eating, so have its food ready before you pop the brew. Wolves take raw meat, and a single stack of Boar Meat is more than enough for a pair.

Because the effect lasts 10 minutes and cannot be re-applied until it expires, drink it once the animal is calm and eating rather than while it is still chasing you. You need to stay within 60 meters for the buff to count, but not so close that you frighten the animal and stall progress. It also mixes freely with other potions.

With farmed Onions and Carrots at your base and a pile of Pungent Pebbles in a chest, each batch costs nothing but two in-game days of fermenting, which makes it worth keeping a Fermenter running in the background before any taming trip.
