The Viking survival game leaves Early Access with a frozen final biome, cross-play, and a Nintendo Switch 2 version.

Valheim is finally graduating from Early Access. After arriving on Steam back in February 2021 and selling millions of copies almost overnight, the Norse survival sandbox from Iron Gate is getting a proper 1.0 release, and it is landing on Nintendo Switch 2 at the same time. The big version 1.0 update brings a brand-new biome, fresh enemies, and full cross-play, so your PC friends can keep dragging you out of trouble while you tend your boars and bees.

Quick answer: Valheim 1.0 launches September 9, 2026 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC, with full cross-play between platforms and the new Deep North biome included.

Valheim 1.0 release date and platforms

Coffee Stain Publishing and Iron Gate set the 1.0 launch for September 9, 2026. That release covers a wide spread of hardware, and the game keeps its existing homes on Linux and Mac alongside the newcomers. You can find the official word on the Valheim site.

What the Deep North biome adds

The headline feature of 1.0 is the Deep North, Valheim’s final biome. It looks like a serene, frozen postcard at first, and then it tries very hard to kill you. When you arrive, expect an impenetrable snowstorm to roll in. Once it clears, you are left staring at snowy mesas and fields locked in eternal stillness, plus the ruins of villages that prove other Vikings reached this place before you did.

The region introduces some of the oldest threats in the whole game. When Valheim’s trolls grow too old, they travel to the Deep North to merge with the land and become Gammeltrolls, primordial giants that guard the north. Below the surface, things get worse. The Elakingar carve tunnels through the underground and ambush adventurers, and they sometimes bring along something even more dangerous. Expect new challenges and weather to match the setting, with the Northern Lights overhead while frosty giants knock you around.

What carries over on Switch 2 and other platforms

The core of Valheim is intact on every platform. It is a brutal exploration and survival game for 1 to 10 players, set in a procedurally generated world drawn from Norse mythology. You sail the open seas, fight blood-thirsty monsters, and prove yourself to Odin across distinct biomes, each with its own enemies, resources, and crafting recipes.

  • Build and customize Viking longhouses with a flexible system that accounts for structural integrity and ventilation.
  • Gather materials to craft weapons, armor, tools, ships, and defenses, then brew meads and potions and grow crops.
  • Use stamina-based combat with parries, dodges, blocking, and ranged attacks that reward preparation.
  • Tame wild boar and keep bees for handy food, with the famous “boar loves you” prompt still intact.
  • Play solo or with up to 10 players on player-hosted dedicated servers, with enemies that scale in difficulty.

The food system is forgiving by design. You cannot starve, and there is no penalty for skipping meals. Instead, the foods you eat hand you health, stamina, and regeneration buffs, which is exactly why those boar and bee products are worth the effort.

How cross-play works between platforms

With 1.0, Valheim supports full cross-play across PC, Linux, Mac, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. That means a Switch 2 player can drop into the same world as friends on PC or console without being walled off by platform. For a game that leans so heavily on co-op survival, this is the practical change that matters most after the new biome.

If you have never touched Valheim, the 1.0 launch is the cleanest moment to start. It is a semi-cozy Viking survival game with room for building, forging, fishing, fighting, and farming, and the Switch 2 version finally makes that portable. The arrival of the Deep North also gives longtime players a concrete reason to load up an old world again and march into the cold.
