Idols are rare upgrade materials in Valheim that let you push weapons and armor past their normal quality cap. They come in two families, Battle and Protection, and both are consumed at a single station called the Forge of Potential. You cannot craft them, so the only way to build a collection is to open enough chests and containers across the world.
Quick answer: Loot random chests, ruins, pots, and barrels for the Idol tier that matches your biome, then carry it plus the gear you want to upgrade to a Forge of Potential in the Mountains and press Attempt Refinement.
What Battle and Protection Idols do
There are 16 Idols in total, split across eight material tiers. Each tier has one Battle Idol and one Protection Idol. Battle Idols refine weapons, tools, and magic staves, while Protection Idols refine armor, capes, and shields.
The tier you need depends on the item you are refining, not on where you found the Idol. As a rule, gear made from a biome’s unique resource wants an Idol of that same material. There are exceptions, such as early axes calling for Iron Idols even though they are Meadows-tier weapons. The Forge always shows the exact Idol requirement for the selected item, so check that before spending anything.
Where to find every Idol tier
Idols drop from random chests and, in some structures, from breakable pots and barrels. Higher-tier biomes produce higher-tier Idols, but drops can overlap between regions, so it is worth checking containers even in areas whose ordinary materials you no longer need. Nothing guarantees an Idol, so expect a fair amount of luck.

The same location often yields either the Battle or the Protection version of a tier, so revisit spots that dropped one type when you are hunting for its counterpart.
Finding the Forge of Potential
Idols only work at the Forge of Potential, and that station appears exclusively in the Mountains biome, out in the open. You cannot build one or carry it home. Walk close to it and the game marks it on your map with a totem-style icon.
Because every Mountains area is freezing, bring cold protection before you head up. Frost Resistance Mead, Wolf Armor, or a chain of campfires will all keep the cold status at bay long enough to reach the forge. It is easiest to make this trip once you have cleared the Swamp and have iron-tier gear.
How to refine gear at the forge
Success, failure, and how to tell them apart
A successful refinement raises the item’s quality by one level and can take it beyond the maximum that ordinary workstations allow, which is the whole point of the system. You will see the item’s level tick up when it works.
Refinement is not guaranteed. There is roughly a 35 percent chance to fail, and a failure destroys the selected item, breaking it down into a portion of its base crafting materials. Any upgrades you had already invested in that item are lost with it, along with the Idol you spent.
Note: Only gamble on gear you can afford to rebuild, especially at high levels. If you would rather skip the grind and the risk entirely, console commands can spawn Idols directly, though that removes the luck-based part of the loop.
