Moder is the frost dragon that guards the Mountain biome in Valheim, and she is the fourth boss in the game’s Forsaken progression. She is the mother of the smaller drakes that circle the peaks, and unlike the three bosses before her, she spends much of the fight in the air, raining ice down while you wait for her to land. Reaching her at all usually means a long haul across ocean and mountain, hauling heavy eggs the whole way.

Quick answer: Moder is Valheim’s fourth boss, a Mountain-biome frost dragon with 7,500 HP, summoned by placing three Dragon Eggs on her Forsaken Altar. She is weak to Fire and immune to Frost.

Moder’s stats, weakness, and immunities

Moder is not the hardest-hitting boss in the game, but she has a large health pool and a long list of immunities that rule out several popular weapons. She takes normal damage from physical hits and extra damage from Fire, so weapon choice matters more than raw defense.

PropertyValue
BiomeMountain
Health7,500 HP
WeaknessFire (x1.5 damage)
Immune toFrost, Spirit, Stagger, Chop, Pickaxe
Neutral toBlunt, Slash, Pierce, Poison
Summon cost3 Dragon Eggs

Because she is immune to both Frost and Spirit, the fan-favorite Frostner mace does almost nothing here. She is also immune to Stagger, so parrying never opens a double-damage window the way it does against other bosses. The Fire weakness is the one edge worth building around.

The Forsaken Altar and Dragon Eggs

Moder does not appear until she is summoned at her altar, a large circular stone platform with three offering bowls set into it. The altar’s location is revealed by interacting with a Vegvisir runestone, which is found inside ruined stone towers and abandoned cabins scattered across the Mountains. Not every mountain has one, so finding the altar can mean searching more than one peak. A runestone beside the platform carries the hint “Sacrifice her spawn.”

The “spawn” the runestone refers to are Dragon Eggs, which glow with a pinkish-purple light and sit in Drake nests high in the Mountains. Up to three drakes can guard a single nest. Each egg weighs 200 units and cannot pass through portals, which makes moving them the real chore of the whole encounter. Players typically carry them overland or by ship, and the trader Haldor’s Megingjord belt, which raises maximum carry weight, lets a lightly loaded Viking manage two at a time.

Once all three eggs are in the bowls, activating the center of the altar begins the summon. The platform erupts in bright magenta smoke, the message “You make the sacrifice” appears, and the sky turns an ominous red as Moder arrives from above with the banner “Moder is enraged.”

How the fight plays out: aerial and grounded phases

Moder switches between two very different states, and each one calls for a different approach. In the air she is out of melee reach and can only be hit with arrows. On the ground she is exposed to a sword but hits hard at close range. Most of the fight is a rhythm of pressuring her from range, then closing in the moment she lands.

Airborne phase

When Moder is flying she circles and fires a spit “shotgun” of icicles roughly every 8 seconds. This attack sends out 16 projectiles in a cone, each dealing 30 Pierce plus 200 Frost, and taking several at once is what kills unprepared players. The icicles also leave breakable ice crystals on the ground that can block movement. Solid cover, such as raised earth or a dug trench that breaks her line of sight, neutralizes the attack, since she will not fire if she cannot see her target.

Grounded phase

When she lands, Moder becomes a melee target with three telegraphed attacks. Standing close under her chin dodges the Cold Breath entirely, because that beam only starts a few meters out from her head.

The Mountain itself is often the bigger threat. Freezing temperatures, wandering Stone Golems, and Wolves or Fenrings joining at night can turn a clean fight into chaos, which is why the terrain around the altar is usually cleared and flattened first.

Weapons, arrows, and frost resistance

A hybrid loadout works best because of the two phases. The Draugr Fang is the standout bow at this stage, since it laces every arrow with Poison that stacks damage over time. For melee, the Silver Sword suits her large hitbox and fast swings, and she takes normal damage from Slash. Frost resistance is mandatory, supplied either by a Wolf Fur Cape or Wolf Armor chest, or by Frost Resistance Mead as a backup if gear is lost on death. These frost sources do not stack.

Arrow choice is a trade-off between raw damage and Moder’s Fire weakness.

What Moder drops and unlocks

When Moder falls, the banner reads “Moder is in tears” and she collapses into a burst of light, leaving behind several Dragon Tears and the Moder Trophy. Hanging the trophy on the chained stone at the Sacrificial Stones grants her Forsaken power, an active buff aimed squarely at travel and hauling.

  • Guaranteed tailwind while sailing
  • +300 maximum carry weight
  • +10% movement speed
  • Frost resistance for the buff’s 300-second duration

The Dragon Tears are the more lasting reward. They build the Artisan Table, a crafting station that opens up the game’s late-game structures. That single unlock is the real gateway past the Mountains and into the Plains tier of progression.

Unlocked structurePurpose
Blast FurnaceSmelts Black Metal scrap into bars
WindmillGrinds barley into flour
Spinning WheelSpins flax into linen thread
Stone OvenBakes breads, pies, and advanced meals

Beating Moder marks the shift from surviving the snow to building for the endgame. The trophy makes every ocean crossing faster and every heavy load lighter, and the Artisan Table turns Plains resources like Black Metal, barley, and flax into the padded armor, blackmetal weapons, and richer food that carry a run through its final stretch.
