Misericorde is a short side quest in the City of Orphans in Valor Mortis. It hinges on one decision. A soldier lies impaled and wrapped in biomass on Shamble Street, and William has to choose whether to end his life. Before that choice appears, you have to destroy a fleshy weak point hidden in the attic of the ruined house across the road.
Quick answer: Destroy the glowing red weak point in the attic of the building opposite the soldier. Then return to him, press E, and press F to choose “End his suffering.”
Where the Misericorde quest starts
The quest starts on Shamble Street, right after you leave the big house there. Go down the stone stairs into the courtyard below. The soldier is pinned in place by biomass and crying out. Looking at him adds Misericorde to your side quests. The journal entry describes William finding a soldier in agony and wondering whether to grant him mercy.
You can confirm the quest is active from the inventory. Open the Side Quests list and look for Misericorde among your active entries.

E to interact. William decides the man won’t survive, and you get two prompts: [E] Do nothing. or [F] End his suffering.F to end his suffering. William says “Forgive me” and stabs the soldier, which closes the quest.
Misericorde rewards and how to confirm completion
Ending the soldier’s suffering brings up a “QUEST COMPLETE” banner for Misericorde. It also gives you +3,000 Catalysts and one Remnant’s Return. The quest then moves from active to completed in your Side Quests list. Its journal ends on a final line saying William chose to end the man’s life.

The journal also has a separate closing stage for sparing him. In that version, William decides that the man’s suffering doesn’t give him the right to take his life. That is the path behind the “Do nothing.” prompt.
Remnant’s Return and City of Orphans reference
Remnant’s Return is a consumable. When you use it, you automatically recover the Catalysts you dropped when you died. That’s useful in the City of Orphans, which has a long enemy roster. One copy comes from Misericorde. The rest can be bought, looted or farmed.
