Void Soul Awakening is a third-person action roguelite from VisRay Studios that runs melee combat, gunplay, and sorcery through the same fast-moving fight. Extended pre-alpha footage set in a gothic dungeon called The Underfall lays out how a single run actually plays, from leveling up and picking passive upgrades to unlocking swappable combat classes and downing a major boss.
Quick answer: It’s a hack-and-slash roguelite where you fight through a shifting cosmic prison toward a ruler called the Keeper. It’s planned for 2027 on PC, and you can wishlist it on Steam now.
The premise and setting
You enter the constantly changing cosmic prison called the Abyssal Cube as a wandering soul. A mysterious woman makes you immortal and gives you one task: escape and defeat the realm’s ruler, the Keeper. Each time you die, you sink further into the cycle and move closer to learning what drives the woman and who the Keeper is.
The player character is a fixed, pre-designed warrior in silver-and-purple plated armor with a spiked helmet, a cloth mantle, and energy wings that shift appearance based on the class you have equipped. The footage opens with the character running through a dark stone hall of glowing statues and ethereal trees before dropping into The Underfall, one of the prison’s dungeon areas.
How combat works: melee, gunplay, and the Lucid State
Combat mixes scythes and twin blades with firearms and magic, and the game expects you to switch between them mid-fight. Melee attacks build your Soul resource, which then powers ranged weapons and abilities. A green health bar, a blue soul/stamina bar scaled to 200, a Soul counter, and an Echo indicator all sit in the bottom-left of the screen.

The standout mechanic is the Lucid State. Chaining kills and combos triggers a “Lucid Active” mode marked by a purple aura, faster movement, and specialized arc attacks. According to the game’s own description, using firearms and sorceries fills your Lucid Meter, and unleashing the state makes you temporarily invulnerable while your Lucid attacks can interrupt enemies and shut down boss moves.

There is also a Soul Overload prompt that fires when the soul meter reaches capacity. Overload modifies your heavy attacks, and one blessing keys directly off it to boost your next several hits.
Blessings shape each run
Every level-up pauses the game and offers a choice between two passive Blessings. These stack up over a run and combine with the gear you find to steer your build. Here are the ones with effects shown in the footage.
| Blessing | Effect |
|---|---|
| Arcane Stance | During Lucid State, your soul weapon becomes an arcane combo dealing 400% of its damage |
| Soul Reserve | Occasionally skips the soul cost on attacks |
| Overload Surge | At Soul Overload, your next 4 attacks deal massively increased damage |
| Executioner | Enemies take more damage when their health is below 20% |
| Moon Cutter | Fires a projectile slash each time the soul meter refills |
| Counter Flurry | Unleashes a flurry of slashes on a perfect dodge |
| Gravetide Sigil | Sends out a shockwave hitting nearby foes after every 2 enemies defeated |
Defensive Instinct, Lucky Armor, and Soul Resonance also appear as alternative picks during level-ups, offered against the options above.
Echoes are swappable combat classes
Echoes are the game’s classes, and you earn them by clearing specific milestones. You can equip more than one and swap between them on the fly, changing your abilities mid-combat. The full release promises around 50 distinct Echoes, each with its own moveset and passive traits, some of which grant traversal skills like wall running and grappling.
Two are unlocked on camera. The Berserker Echo comes from beating a Covenant Idol’s three-minute trial and casts a spell that briefly raises your defense by 40%. The Ghost Echo drops from the Iron Gaoler boss and summons a spectral ally that slashes through enemies. A third, Phantom, shows up in the Echo selection wheel.
Both Echoes are triggered by interacting with a relic or boss core, which prompts an “Echo Acquired” banner and an ability card. You confirm them with the Evolve action and manage the loadout by holding the “View Echoes” button.
Weapons and the Orizon’s Armory hub
Weapons come from glowing altar chests scattered through the dungeon and from a merchant hub. Firearms are grouped under “Type K” model names, while melee weapons have their own titles and elemental-style traits such as Wither and Cursed. The chests present a choice, so picking up one weapon can mean skipping the other.

| Weapon | Class | Fire rate | Damage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type K / Vorago | Shotgun | Slow | 67 (13% Wither) |
| Blackwing Scythe | Melee | — | 84 |
| Type K / Fusillade | Automatic | Very Fast | 37 (4% Cursed) |
| Type K / Solaris | Beam | Fast | Standard |
| Type K / Howler | Automatic | Very Fast | Standard |

Discovered ritual circles act as fast-travel nodes and open a sector map with labeled rooms, merchant markers, and boss icons. One of those routes leads to Orizon’s Armory, a hub stocked with weapon racks. There you meet Orizon, a horned blacksmith demon, and his companion Morrow. Orizon sells guns for soul currency, with items like the Fusillade and Solaris priced at 299, and he refuses to hand anything over for free.
Trials, the Whisper Seal, and the Iron Gaoler boss
The Underfall is packed with optional challenges and gates. A giant hooded angel statue, the Covenant Idol, offers a timed trial: defeat its warriors within three minutes or perish. Clearing the arena spawns a floating relic crystal that awards the Berserker Echo.

Another gate is the Whisper Seal, a circular purple glyph that states, “To pass beyond, you must possess what is absent within you.” It hints that certain doors depend on what you carry into them.

The dungeon’s major fight is the Iron Gaoler, flagged on screen as a “Warden.” This winged, scythe-wielding boss teleports around the arena, throws green crescent projectiles, and drops AoE shockwaves. Landing decisive Lucid strikes triggers a “Warden Slain” banner, after which the boss core hands over the Ghost Echo. A silver skull key then appears in a violet rift, opening the path deeper.
The Abyssal Cube and its scale
The Underfall is one slice of a much larger structure. The Abyssal Cube is split into four non-linear sectors, each with a mix of procedural and hand-crafted levels you can explore out of order. Every sector is guarded by an Archon, and defeating that gatekeeper opens the path to the next layer.
The developer lists an ambitious content spread for the full game.
- More than 30 hand-crafted bosses, with major kills unlocking Echoes
- 50+ firearms, from precision rifles to cursed launchers
- 40+ melee weapons with unique movesets and elemental affinities
- Around 50 Echoes that double as combat classes
- 80+ enemy types that escalate as the Cube reacts to your growth
