The Sulfur Cube is the strangest passive mob to come out of the Chaos Cubed drop, a pale, jumpy little block-eater that changes its physics depending on what it swallows. The catch is that it lives in exactly one place, spawns under strict conditions, and shows up rarely enough that finding one takes real patience.
Quick answer: Sulfur Cubes only spawn in the Sulfur Caves biome at light level 0, in groups of two to four. Find the biome by digging down beneath a bubbling sulfur spring on the surface, or run /locate biome minecraft:sulfur_caves, then search the darkest, unlit corners of the cave.
Where Sulfur Cubes spawn in Minecraft
Sulfur Cubes appear only inside Sulfur Caves, a warm-toned underground biome filled with yellow sulfur blocks, deep red cinnabar, and pointed sulfur spikes. No other region produces them. If you are not standing in a Sulfur Cave, you will never bump into one, no matter how long you mine.
The biome generates deep underground, around the lower Y-levels where you would normally dig for diamonds. It is less common beneath oceans, hills, and mountains, so flat overworld terrain gives you the best odds of hitting one. There is also a surface tell. Sulfur springs generate on top of the Overworld directly above these caves, marked by small bubbles and a haze of noxious gas. Dig straight down under a spring and you will usually drop right into a Sulfur Cave.

Spawn conditions and how rare Sulfur Cubes are
Even inside the right biome, Sulfur Cubes are not easy to find. Large cubes spawn naturally only at light level 0, meaning completely dark spots. They turn up in small clusters of two to four, and the spawn roll is low compared to most mobs.

Because the spawn chance hovers around 32 percent, you may sweep an entire cave and come up empty. There is no item or trick that speeds this up. Your best move is to comb the darkest corners and listen for the squishy, hopping sound the cubes make as they bounce. Those same unlit pockets attract hostile mobs, so go in prepared for a fight.
One quirk worth knowing: because the game treats Sulfur Cubes as monsters, older Bedrock builds will not spawn them on Peaceful difficulty despite their passive behavior. Bump the difficulty up to at least Easy if you are hunting on Bedrock.
How to turn on Sulfur Caves and Sulfur Cubes
The Chaos Cubed content is still in testing, so you need to opt in before any of it shows up in your world. On Java Edition, the feature arrives through snapshots with the matching experimental data pack enabled. Without that toggle active, Sulfur Caves will not generate, even in freshly created chunks, so flip it on before you start a world you plan to explore for cubes.
What Sulfur Cubes do once you find one
A large Sulfur Cube can absorb a single full-sized block into its body. You can drop a block near it and let the cube move toward it, hold a block and interact with the cube directly, or push a block in with a dispenser. Once swallowed, the block locks inside, the cube stops moving, and it becomes immune to most damage. Hit it in that state and it launches like a ball instead of taking a hit.
The block you feed it decides how it behaves. Wood makes it bouncy, ice makes it slide, wool makes it float, and so on across a dozen possible physics types. Two of those are genuinely dangerous. The Explosive type comes from TNT and can be lit, and the Hot type comes from a magma block and damages nearby entities. Otherwise the cube is a harmless companion that never attacks on its own.
How to remove a block from a Sulfur Cube
To free a cube that has swallowed a block, use shears on it. The block pops out as an item and the cube starts bouncing freely again. A dispenser loaded with shears does the same job if you want it automated. Killing the cube also drops the absorbed block, but given how rare these mobs are, shears are the smarter choice when you just want your material back.
You will know everything lined up when a large cube sits still with a block visible inside it and takes knockback instead of damage when you strike it. The Chaos Cubed drop is still moving through snapshots and Bedrock previews, so a few textures and finer numbers may shift before it lands in a stable release.
