The Mystery Key is the item that opens the door to Chapter 5’s optional secret boss in Deltarune. Buying it is simple once you have enough pink coins, but the door it fits sits far off the main path near the end of the Dark World, which is why so many players end up holding the key with nowhere obvious to use it.
Quick answer: Gather 10 pink coins, buy the Mystery Key from the shop on the cliffs, then, near the top of the castle, go left instead of continuing forward, drop into the pit, and follow the platforming path to the locked door. Use the key there to reach the secret boss.

Collect 10 pink coins first
The Mystery Key costs 10 pink coins, so the coins are the real requirement here. Pink coins are scattered throughout the Dark World, usually hidden behind a puzzle, a platforming trick, or a pushed-statue solution rather than left out in plain sight.
There are more than 10 in the chapter, so missing one or two will not lock you out. None of the coins sit in the final area, which means you should not wait until the end to start collecting. Once the fast-travel doors open later in the chapter, backtracking through earlier areas to sweep up any you missed becomes much easier.
Buy the Mystery Key from the cliffs shop
With 10 pink coins in hand, head to the shop on the cliffs, run by the girl who trades there. You can reach it quickly through any fast-travel door by selecting the Cliffs option. Walk up the steps to reach the counter.
The Mystery Key is the fourth item on her shop list. Buy it. If the shop tells you that you cannot afford it, you are still short on coins and need to go back and find more before returning.

Reach the hidden pink door at the top of the castle
The door is deliberately tucked away near the very end of the Dark World, close to the final boss. Because of that, get as far through the chapter as possible before you try to open it.

Note: A fast-travel door sits near the boss room, so you can leave to stock up and return when you are ready rather than committing to the fight the moment you arrive.
What waits behind the door
Beyond the door is the chapter’s secret boss, the returning possessed doll Mad Mew Mew from Undertale. This lines up with a hint from Seam, who suggested the Mannequin from Chapter 2 would prove useful this time, which fits a mannequin-based fight.
Like the secret bosses before it, such as Jevil and Spamton, this fight is a clear difficulty spike with dense bullet patterns. Save your game first, carry plenty of healing, and stock up on Green Tea before you commit. If you have the Chapter 2 Mannequin, bring it; if not, you can still manage the fight by leaning on healing, levels, and patience.
How to confirm it worked
You will know the key was used correctly the moment the locked door opens and drops you into the boss arena. There is no other lock the Mystery Key fits, so if the door does not respond, make sure you are standing in your normal form rather than the swapped perspective.
This content is fully optional and easy to skip past, exactly like the hidden bosses in earlier chapters. If you want it, finish the coin hunt and buy the key before you clear the chapter, because the door sits just before the point of no return.
