Every step of the Mohist Hill sabotage case, from finding Tian Laosan to the ledger turn-in and its rewards.

Every step of the Mohist Hill sabotage case, from finding Tian Laosan to the ledger turn-in and its rewards.

Broken mechanical oxen are piling up in the rice fields of Jadestream Valley, and a scholar at Mohist Hill wants to know who has been smashing them. Beast of Burden is a short Wandering Tale that wraps up in a few minutes if you know exactly where the marker sits, and it pays out the standard Wandering Tale bundle of Echo Jade, Hidden Mountain Jade, Coins and Stored EXP.

Quick answer: Talk to Mo Yu at Mohist Hill, pull Tian Laosan free from the broken mechanical ox in the fields below, take his ledger, then hand it to Mo Yu.

Beast of Burden quest details

DetailValue
Quest typeWandering Tale
RegionJadestream Valley, Hidden Mountain
Starting NPCMo Yu, at Mohist Hill
Second NPCTian Laosan, in the fields below
Key itemTian Laosan’s Ledger

The tale appears under Wandering Tales in the Exploration menu, filed with the rest of the Jadestream Valley entries. Selecting it there places a marker on the world map, which is the fastest way to line up a teleport point before you ride or glide in.

Start the quest with Mo Yu at Mohist Hill

Travel to Mohist Hill in Jadestream Valley. The settlement is a cluster of wooden walkways and raised decks, and Mo Yu waits on a platform near stacked grain sacks with a farmer beside him.

Follow the raised walkways through the village until the quest marker resolves onto Mo Yu’s platform.
Talk to Mo Yu and let the conversation with the farmer play out. The objective switches to “Wait for developments” while they argue about the sabotaged oxen, so stay put until the dialogue finishes.

The objective reads “Wait for developments” while Mo Yu and the farmer finish talking.
Watch for the “Wandering Tales: New Clue Acquired” banner. The log entry notes that several mechanical oxen in the fields of Jadestream Valley were deliberately wrecked, and that rumors name Tian Laosan as the culprit.

Find Tian Laosan and get the ledger

The new marker drops into the flooded rice fields directly below the village, so this is a short trip rather than a cross-region ride. Open the map once before you leave to fix the direction, then take the quickest way down.

Leave Mo Yu’s platform and head down from the settlement. You can follow the path under the wooden bridge and cut through the reeds, or simply glide off the edge of the deck and land in the paddies.
Look for the broken mechanical ox in the corner of the field. Tian Laosan is pinned beside it and shouting for help, which makes him easy to pick out among the reeds.
Use the F Pull prompt to free him. The prompt “You step forward and pull him to safety” confirms the rescue, and the log updates to note that he injured himself while trying to wreck another mechanical ox.
Speak to him a second time and work through the dialogue. Picking “Wait! My head’s spinning…” keeps the conversation going, and he admits he fears the machines will take over the fieldwork and leave him without a living.

The second conversation with Tian Laosan is where his confession and the ledger come through.
Collect Tian Laosan’s Ledger. It is filed as an Anecdotes: Mechanism item and described as a farmer’s ledger full of cows, stick figures and rice stalks, with a note that the scholars at Mohist Hill would want to see it.

Hand the ledger to Mo Yu to finish the tale

Retrace the route back up to Mohist Hill. The walkways and bridges you came down are the shortest way back, and the marker returns to Mo Yu’s deck.
Interact with Mo Yu and choose Give. The gifting interface opens so you can pick the item you are handing over.
Interaction prompt highlighted as the player begins talking to Mo Yu back at Mohist Hill
Back on the deck, the interact prompt on Mo Yu opens the Give menu for the turn-in.
Submit Tian Laosan’s Ledger and finish the remaining dialogue. “Gift Sent” appears once the item transfers, and Mo Yu brushes off the farmer’s worries as paranoia.

If the Give menu does not show the ledger, you skipped the second conversation in the field. Go back and talk to Tian Laosan again until he hands it over.

Beast of Burden rewards

RewardAmount
Echo Jade30
Hidden Mountain Jade10
Coin3,750
Stored EXP3,750

The payout matches the standard Hidden Mountain Wandering Tale rate, so it is worth clearing alongside the other Jadestream Valley entries rather than making a dedicated trip for it.

How to confirm the quest is complete

  • A banner reading “Wandering Tales: Beast of Burden-Ending Unlocked” appears after the final dialogue.
  • The reward screen shows Echo Jade, Hidden Mountain Jade, Coin and Stored EXP.
  • The Wandering Tales Details log gains a closing entry about the scholar dismissing Tian Laosan’s fears.
  • Beast of Burden is marked as finished under Jadestream Valley in the Exploration menu.

Once the ending entry lands in the log, nothing else is required. The ledger leaves your inventory with the turn-in, and the Jadestream Valley completion counter ticks up, which matters if you are working toward full exploration in the region.
