Needle in a Haystack is a main quest in Windrose that sends you after a life-saving artifact held by one of Blackbeard's lieutenants, Israel Hands. The quest spans naval combat, multiple pirate camps across the Foothills, and a tense boss fight inside an ancient temple. Completing it earns you a legendary artifact and the Soul Eater sword.
Quick answer: You must clear pirate camps in the Foothills, sink and board the Unsinkable, search a camp near ancient ruins, collect three Ritual Keys from Hands' lieutenants, then defeat Israel Hands inside the sealed temple.

Search the pirate camps in the Foothills
Head to the Foothills and travel to the far west side of the map. A handful of enemies guard the camp entrance, so clear them out before entering. The camp itself is easy to spot — look for fires burning behind wooden barricades. Go inside and loot everything you can. You need to find documents labeled "On Hands," "On Fools," and "On Prisoners." Once you have all three, the journal updates with the next objective.

Board the Unsinkable — Naval battle
Sail east into open water. Four of Blackbeard's ships will intercept you before the Unsinkable itself appears. Use cannonballs and chain shots to take them down. Your crew will automatically fire on the Unsinkable once it closes in, which frees you to focus on steering.
Step 1: Keep your ship moving in a circular path around the Unsinkable. Staying stationary makes you an easy target for incoming cannon fire.

Step 2: Close the distance and keep hammering the Unsinkable's health bar with cannonballs. Prioritize it over the smaller escort ships.
Step 3: Once the Unsinkable's health is low enough, pull alongside it so your crew can board. Stay on your own ship and pick off enemies with ranged weapons first.

Step 4: Board the Unsinkable and fight the remaining pirates one at a time. If too many rush you at once, jump back to your ship, thin the crowd from range, and board again. Repeat until everyone is dead.
After clearing the ship, you receive the Journal of the Captain of the Unsinkable, which points you toward the next location.
Search the camp near the ruins
Sail northwest until you reach the shoreline, then head inland through the coastal jungle toward the Foothills. Follow the quest marker carefully — wolves roam this area and can kill you quickly if you're not paying attention.
When you arrive at the camp, several enemies are waiting. They throw grenades, so keep your distance and engage them one by one. Once the area is safe, look to the left side of the camp for a wax-stained desk. Interacting with it triggers the next objective. Before you can leave, though, a wave of Grenadiers and a Hands Lieutenant will attack, so be ready for a second fight immediately after the interaction.
Collect the three Ritual Keys
A note on the desk reveals that Hands has locked himself inside an ancient temple, and you need three Ritual Keys to open the gates. From the ruins, follow the quest marker north to another pirate camp in the Foothills. There you'll find a dead pirate — search his pockets to collect the temple keys. The quest log will confirm you have what you need and update the objective to "Defeat Hands."
Defeat Israel Hands — Boss fight strategy
Travel to the temple gate marked on your map. Outside the temple, Musketeers, Sailors, and Sergeants guard the approach. Clear them all before using the Ritual Keys to open the sealed stone door.
Proceed down the stairs and open the second large gate. This triggers the one-on-one fight against Israel Hands.

Israel Hands attack patterns
| Attack | How to counter |
|---|---|
| Rush attack | Dodge to the side just before impact |
| Chain combo | Parry the incoming strikes |
| Projectile throws | Parry or sidestep |
The core rhythm of this fight is patience. Hands pauses briefly after finishing an attack sequence, and that pause is your window to land a few hits. Strike immediately after he completes a rush or combo, then back off before he recovers. He can block some of your swings, so don't overcommit — two or three hits per opening is usually the safe limit.
You can also catch him during the wind-up of an attack if your timing is sharp, but this is riskier. Use bandages whenever your health drops low. If you die, the game respawns you at the temple gate, so you can re-enter and try again without losing progress.
Once Hands falls, he drops the Soul Eater sword. Pick it up — it's one of the stronger weapons you can carry into later content.

Rescue the captive and wrap up
Step 1: After defeating Hands, look around the temple interior. You'll find John, the sole surviving captive, chained to a wall. Speak with him and free him.
Step 2: Your journal updates to "Continue the conversation with the cartographer at the camp." Travel back to camp and speak with John once he has recovered.
Step 3: Finally, talk to Doctor Galen. He'll discuss the artifact you recovered and outline what comes next in your quest for a cure. The quest completes at this point, though Galen makes it clear that more artifacts are still needed.

Needle in a Haystack is one of the longer main quests in Windrose, but the rewards — a legendary artifact, the Soul Eater sword, and a new cartographer ally — make it well worth the effort. Keep bandages stocked, stay mobile during naval combat, and respect Israel Hands' attack windows, and you'll get through it without too much trouble.
