Windrose Tainted Bile - Plague Crocodile Farming and Ingot Arborum Use

Tainted Bile is a Tier 3 resource in Windrose tied directly to endgame crafting. It only drops from Plague Crocodiles in the Cursed Swamps biome, and it is the gating ingredient for Ingot Arborum at the Enchanting Table.

Quick answer: Kill Plague Crocodiles around Sacrificial Altars and ruined temple points of interest in the Cursed Swamps. Each kill drops 2 Tainted Bile. You need 1 Tainted Bile per Ingot Arborum craft.

What Tainted Bile is and why it matters

Tainted Bile is described in-game as bile harvested from tainted crocodile remains. It carries a weight of 0.0 and stacks up to 30 per inventory slot, which makes long farming runs practical without encumbrance issues.

Its only confirmed use is as a recipe component for Ingot Arborum, the alloy that unlocks Tier 4 and Tier 5 weapons, armor, Bullet Arborum ammunition, and high-end jewelry crafted at the Enchanting Table and weaponsmith stations.

Cursed Swamps access requirements

Tainted Bile cannot be reached until you progress out of the Foothills. Defeating Israel Hands, the Foothills boss, opens travel into the Cursed Swamps, which is the third major region. The Forgotten Relics quest is typically the first hook into the swamp once it unlocks.

Plague Crocodiles do not appear outside this biome. Regular jungle and coastal crocodiles share the same animation set but never drop Tainted Bile, so check the model before engaging.

How to identify a Plague Crocodile

Plague Crocodiles are visually distinct from standard crocodiles. They have glowing eyes, sickly discolored skin, and are sometimes referred to in community write-ups as black or infected crocodiles. They cluster around disease-themed points of interest and waterlogged ground inside the swamp.

Best Tainted Bile farming locations

LocationPlague CrocodilesApprox. Tainted Bile per clearNotes
Frescoed Ruins3 (Level 15)6Often clumped together; expect a heavy pull.
Sacrificial Altar (East)3 (Level 12)6Can be pulled separately, easiest farm.
Tainted Ruins of an Ancient Temple (North)2 (one may be elite)4-6Spawn point sits north of the POI marker.

Map seeds vary, so the islands themselves shift between worlds, but each island layout keeps the same internal POIs once you locate it. Plague Crocodile respawns sit roughly in the 120-150 minute window, allowing about 16 Tainted Bile per circuit when all three sites are cleared.

Combat approach

Plague Crocodiles attack with predictable lunges, sometimes chained into a second bite. Side-dodging the first swipe and watching for the follow-up keeps you out of damage. Open ground works better than tight ruins, where they can corner you.

Ranged weapons are the safest option. A bow or crossbow lets you kite in straight lines, since their pursuit path is linear. Bring healing items, and clear excess inventory before pulling, so encumbrance penalties do not slow your dodges.

On multiplayer servers, one player taking aggro while others fire from distance trivializes the encounter. Solo players who are still under-leveled can sometimes find fresh crocodile carcasses in the swamp when environmental hazards or other mobs kill one first; bile can be harvested from those remains without combat.

Using Tainted Bile to craft Ingot Arborum

Ingot Arborum is crafted at the Enchanting Table. The recipe per ingot is fixed.

IngredientQuantitySource
Essence Arborum2Smelt Plague Wood 1:1 in any furnace
Mire Metal Ingot2Smelt 2 Ancient Scraps + 1 Quagmire Powder at the Large Smelting Furnace
Tainted Bile1Plague Crocodile drop

The craft completes in roughly 45 seconds and outputs one Ingot Arborum. Picking up your first Essence Arborum from the furnace is what unlocks the Enchanting Table recipe in the menu, so do not skip that pickup.

Note: If you have not yet built the Enchanting Table itself, budget an extra 2 Essence Arborum and 3 Mire Metal Ingots on top of the per-ingot recipe to cover the station build cost.

How to confirm a successful farm

After a Plague Crocodile dies, loot the corpse directly. Tainted Bile appears in your inventory as a stackable Tier 3 resource at zero weight. If the corpse only yields hide or meat, the kill was a regular crocodile, not the plague variant, and you should reroll your route to a confirmed POI from the table above.

At the Enchanting Table, the Ingot Arborum recipe will only highlight as craftable when all three ingredients are present in the correct quantities. A grayed-out recipe means a missing component, most often Tainted Bile or Mire Metal Ingot.

Common reasons farming fails

  • Engaging standard crocodiles outside the Cursed Swamps. Only the plague variant drops bile.
  • Returning to a cleared POI before the 120-150 minute respawn window has elapsed.
  • Getting interrupted by Plague Witches or Hunters mid-fight, which can wipe a run before loot is collected.
  • Skipping the first Essence Arborum pickup, leaving the Enchanting Table recipe locked even when Tainted Bile is in your bag.

Treat Tainted Bile as a scheduled farm rather than an opportunistic drop. Pair the crocodile circuit with Quagmire Powder routes so Mire Metal Ingot supply keeps pace, and the Ingot Arborum bottleneck loosens quickly enough to keep Tier 4 and Tier 5 crafting moving.
