World of Warcraft: Wayward Weapons Quest Guide

Wayward Weapons is one of the first tasks a new Horde character picks up in the Valley of Trials, the starting area in Durotar. Gornek asks you to salvage the training weapons that failed recruits left scattered on the ground, and once you have enough you turn them in to the weaponsmith. It pairs neatly with the boar-hunting quest you receive at the same time, so both can be finished in a single loop of the valley.

Quick answer: Pick up the Abandoned Training Weapons lying on the ground across the Valley of Trials, then return them to Kzan Thornslash in the Den to complete the quest.

Wayward Weapons quest details

The quest is handed out by Gornek and turned in to Kzan Thornslash, who stands in the Den right behind him. Everything takes place inside the Valley of Trials, so there is no travel involved. The objective is to salvage a set number of Abandoned Training Weapons from the ground.

The number of weapons you need is shown in your quest tracker and can read as either 6 or 8 depending on the game version you are playing. Keep collecting until the counter fills.

Where to find the Abandoned Training Weapons

The weapons are spread across the open red-dirt ground of the Valley of Trials, roughly around coordinates 41.6, 68.6. They appear as small axes and other weapon props resting on the cracked earth, often near rocks and cacti, and each one has a faint sparkling glint that helps you spot it. Yellow objective markers on your minimap and world map point toward the search area.

How to collect and turn in the weapons

Accept Wayward Weapons from Gornek, then head out into the open terrain of the valley. Also grab Cutting Teeth from him so you can work on both at once.

Scan the ground as you walk. Look for the small weapon props with the glinting sparkle effect sitting on the cracked earth, between the rocks and cactus clusters.

Move your cursor over a weapon until the interaction cog appears, then click it to salvage the item. Each pickup advances your counter, for example from 1/8 up to the total you need.

Keep circling the valley and picking up weapons until the tracker shows the full amount. Then return to Kzan Thornslash in the Den and hand the quest in to claim your experience and reputation.

Run Cutting Teeth at the same time

Cutting Teeth sends you after the Mottled Boar packs that roam the same ground, and the quest tracks slain boars (for example 5/10) as you fight. Because the boars share the exact area where the weapons lie, you can kill them along your route and finish both objectives on one pass. Combat here also builds your starting weapon skill, so early strikes like an axe skill going up to 4 and then 5 are normal.

How to confirm the quest is complete

You know the collection is done when your quest tracker reads the full count, such as 8/8, and the objective is marked complete. Turning the weapons in to Kzan Thornslash removes Wayward Weapons from your quest log and awards the experience plus the Orgrimmar and Darkspear Trolls reputation. From there you can carry on with the rest of the Valley of Trials starting chain.
