World of Warcraft: Where to Tame the Armored Scorpid in Durotar

The Armored Scorpid is the final creature Horde hunters must tame during the “Taming the Beast” quest line, and it lives in a fairly tight patch of Durotar. If you have already handled the Dire Mottled Boar and the Surf Crawler, this is the last capture before you head back for your reward.

Quick answer: Head west of Razor Hill into the rocky canyon pass near Thunder Ridge and the Razormane Grounds, target an Armored Scorpid, and channel the Taming Rod until “Scorpid Captured” appears.

Armored Scorpids roam the central, rocky part of Durotar. From Razor Hill, run west into the mountain pass that cuts between the red hills toward Thunder Ridge and the Razormane Grounds. The scorpids wander the open ground here alongside raptors.

These are yellow, low-level Beasts, roughly level 7 to 9, so any single one is an easy target once you separate it from the pack. Look for one standing apart from the others so you can start the channel without extra attackers.

The Bloodtalon Taillasher raptors share this area. Pick a scorpid that is clear of them, because pulling a raptor mid-channel can interrupt the tame.

What you need before taming

The tame is part of the level 10 Hunter quest “Taming the Beast,” given by Thotar at Razor Hill. Make sure the following are in place before you go looking for a scorpid.

Hunter class, Orc or Troll, at level 10.
The “Taming the Beast” quest that asks you to “Tame an Armored Scorpid.”
The Taming Rod in your bags, provided by the quest.

The Taming Rod casts Tame Armored Scorpid, a channeled ability with a 20-second cast and a 30-yard range. It borrows the beast for 10 minutes only, which is enough to complete the objective. If you lose the beast’s attention during the channel, the tame fails and you have to start again.

How to tame the Armored Scorpid

Travel west from Razor Hill and enter the canyon pass through the hills. Watch the terrain for a lone Armored Scorpid that is not standing next to any raptors.

Click the target to select the scorpid, then use the Taming Rod to begin the channel. Keep your target locked on the scorpid for the full cast.

Let the channel run. The scorpid will hit you during the 20 seconds, but you do not need to fight back. Just hold position and take the damage until the taming animation finishes.

Confirm the tame and turn in the quest

You know it worked when the message Scorpid Captured appears and the objective “Tame an Armored Scorpid” updates to complete. The scorpid becomes your companion for the short duration, which is all the quest needs.

With the objective done, head back east to Razor Hill and return to Thotar. Completing the quest teaches you Taming Lesson, casts Tame Beast on you, and grants 840 experience, so you can go tame a permanent pet of your choosing afterward.
