Patch 12.1, subtitled Curse of Ula’tek, is the first major content update for World of Warcraft: Midnight, and it lifts the fog off the Coiled Isle east of Zul’Aman. It bundles a new outdoor zone, the eight-boss Venomous Abyss raid, the Altar of Fangs dungeon, a fresh Lair world-boss system, three Delves, a full gearing reset, and a stack of housing tools. The level cap stays at 90, so the update is about new places to fight rather than more levels to grind.
Quick answer: The Curse of Ula’tek content update lands in mid-August 2026 and opens the Coiled Isle, the Altar of Fangs dungeon (Heroic at launch), Lairs, and housing updates. Midnight Season 2, which unlocks the Venomous Abyss raid, Mythic+, Bountiful Delves, and the new PvP season, begins one week later on August 18.

When Patch 12.1 and Season 2 go live
Curse of Ula’tek rolls out in two steps. The content update comes first, opening the campaign and the outdoor zone, then Season 2 arrives a week later to switch on the endgame. That gap exists so you can finish the story before the raid doors open.
| Milestone | Timing | What unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Content update | Mid-August 2026 | Coiled Isle, campaign, Altar of Fangs (Heroic), Lairs, housing updates |
| Midnight Season 2 | August 18 (US) / August 19 (EU) | Venomous Abyss raid, Mythic+, Bountiful Delves, PvP season, more Prey |
When Season 2 flips on, gear gets re-baselined. High-end Heroic and Mythic pieces from Season 1 drop toward Normal-equivalent item level, and the Delve seasonal track wipes completely, including any rewards you never claimed.
The Coiled Isle and what to do there
The Coiled Isle is the new outdoor zone, part of the Eastern Kingdoms and reachable by flying straight out from Zul’Aman. It continues Zul’jan’s story, with Zul’jarra chasing after her brother, and it is soaked in venom, cursed water, and Amani history. Inside the mountain sit the Vaults of Atal’Utek, which host group content and rotating public events that build toward boss fights.
The island has its own progression layer called the Altar of Corrosion, a zone-only talent tree. Its perks work only on the Coiled Isle and include one that reduces the potency of the venom scattered around the environment, so it is worth spending points there early to survive the trash. Two more systems fill out the open world.
- Curse Surges spawn rare elites at five rotating locations. Killing a rare unlocks Venom Fishing in that spot.
- Cursed Fishing ties into a local story with a tortollan sea captain named Tokka. Earning reputation with his crew opens up more cursed waters to fish.
None of this is mandatory. The rewards are built so completionists can do everything, while players who only care about one activity can chase that and skip the rest. The fishing rewards, for example, loop back into fishing itself with a rod that makes you better at Midnight Fishing, so it pays off only if you enjoy it.
Venomous Abyss raid and Ula’tek
The Venomous Abyss is the Season 2 raid, an eight-boss Amani troll-themed instance buried beneath the isle. Ula’tek, an ancient creature of hatred and venom sealed away for more than sixteen thousand years, waits at the bottom as the final boss after Zul’jan’s actions free her. She is a huge, five-headed serpent that fights inside her own poisonous domain, so expect a hostile environment on the way up to her.

| Encounter | Notes |
|---|---|
| Nek’zali the Soulcoiler | Opening boss of the raid |
| Entombed Sentinels | Twin constructs filled with Ula’tek’s blood and venom; players are marked with debuffs that must be collided in the right count to clear |
| The Lost Explorers | Three possessed tortollans, a lighter, whimsical fight tucked among the heavy themes |
| Vashnik the Malignant | Distills venom in the Chamber of Virulence |
| Sszorak | A bestial serpent fought on a platform buffeted by six winds you maneuver with venom |
| The Twin Fangs | Mid-raid encounter |
| The Coiled Altar | One of three Altar encounters, includes the Writhing Coil, a snake made of snakes you peel apart |
| Ula’tek | Final boss, hidden on the PTR to stay a surprise for World First |
Because most of the roster is serpent-themed, the design leans on variety within Ula’tek’s brood, the Children of Ula’tek, which show up as flying snakes, hydras, and other forms with different combat archetypes. Raid Finder opens in four wings across four weeks, one boss pair at a time, starting the week of August 18, so the full raid is not available on LFR day one.
Altar of Fangs dungeon and the Season 2 Mythic+ pool
Altar of Fangs is the new three-boss dungeon on the Coiled Isle, ending in a fight against the troll Zul’jan. It opens on Heroic the moment the content update lands, while Mythic and Mythic+ stay locked until Season 2 starts a week later. When the season begins, it joins a rotation of eight dungeons.
| Midnight dungeons | Returning dungeons |
|---|---|
| Altar of Fangs | Kings’ Rest |
| Murder Row | Ruby Life Pools |
| Den of Nalorakk | Temple of Sethraliss |
| The Blinding Vale | — |
| Voidscar Arena | — |
Poison and curse effects run through the season’s competitive content, and dispels matter. Shamans in particular get a strong dispel toolkit for the tier, and encounter design tries to avoid raw throughput checks. A poison hit is more likely to show up as a snare you can break, or a healing absorb you strip off faster with a poison or curse removal, than as a flat damage tax.
Lairs and the Tidebound Grotto
Lairs are a new take on world bosses. Instead of standing outside a giant enemy waiting for enough players to gather, you walk up to a summoning stone at a fixed location, and the system helps form the group for you. Lairs scale from World Difficulty, which mimics the old open-world feel, up through Normal, Heroic, and flexible Mythic for 15 to 25 players, with higher difficulties dropping better loot.
The Lair coming with 12.1 is the Tidebound Grotto, a one-boss, Naga-themed encounter with Nymrissa Wavecaller that you reach by swimming down in an archipelago area of the Coiled Isle. It is built to be the most accessible raid-style content in a long time. On Heroic and below, solid individual play and attention to mechanics should carry an appropriately geared pick-up group. Flex Mythic asks for a short strategy chat, but nothing spreadsheet-heavy. Its Naga aesthetic and spell effects are meant to break up the venom-soaked feel of the main raid.
New Delves in Curse of Ula’tek
Three Delves arrive with the update, including a new Nemesis Delve. The Ring of Glory and Gnarldor Isle are the standard additions, while Venomfall Deeps is the Nemesis Delve. Existing Midnight Delves also get snake and venom variants added to their encounters.
When Season 2 begins on August 18, Bountiful Delves become available, and you can push past Tier 7 to face the new Nemesis boss. Keep in mind the seasonal Delve track resets at that point, so clear anything you still want from Season 1 first.
Season 2 gearing: Mistcrests and Great Vault changes
Mistcrests are the new Season 2 upgrade currency, and they fully replace Dawncrests. There are five tiers, each locked to its own upgrade track. Mix the wrong tier into an item and the upgrade simply will not apply. Every rank costs a flat 20 Mistcrests, capped at 100 per week, which is exactly five upgrades. Valorstones are gone, so upgrades now cost crests plus a small gold fee, and Warband alts get a 50 percent discount on crest costs.
| Mistcrest tier | Primary sources |
|---|---|
| Adventurer | Repeatable outdoor content and lower-tier Delves |
| Veteran | Raid Finder, Heroic seasonal dungeons, mid-tier Delves |
| Champion | Normal raid, Mythic dungeons, low Mythic Keystones |
| Hero | Heroic raid, Mythic Keystones 4 to 8, high-tier Delves |
| Myth | Mythic raid, Mythic Keystone 9 and higher |
The Great Vault gets a notable boost. Completing raid rows in the Vault hands out gear one tier higher than what the boss drops directly. Clear a Normal boss and the Vault offers Hero gear; clear a Heroic boss and it offers Myth gear. To keep Mythic raiders ahead, the last two Venomous Abyss bosses and Very Rare drops can push into a new 9/6 Myth upgrade tier that crests cannot buy directly. Bonus Rolls also return straight from the Vault at season start, and the Catalyst now keeps an item’s original secondary stats when converting it into a tier piece.
Note: Since Mistcrest tracks do not mix, push Hero-track items to their cap before spending any Myth Mistcrests, and let the Vault hand you Myth pieces before you invest crests catching everything else up.
Story beats: Zul’jan, the Lost Explorers, and Arator
The campaign continues the middle chapter of the Worldsoul Saga. Midnight is bigger than just Xal’atath and the Void, and 12.1 grounds that larger threat in the still-active conflict between the blood elves and the Amani. You quest alongside Zul’jara and Lady Liadrin, and with Orweyna, whose own connection to the Worldsoul leads toward hidden truths. The main campaign has already begun with the 12.0.7 Revelations chapter featuring Zul’jan, then moves on to the Coiled Isle.

Arator’s hunt for Xal’atath is not playable at the very start of the patch. It opens later, after Season 2 begins and the Venomous Abyss raid is live, since the story requires that order. The zone also digs into ancient Amani history, including the existential threat of Kith’ix and the creature the trolls raised from the Rift of Aln to stop it, which is where Ula’tek comes from.
Not every story is heavy. The Lost Explorers raid encounter started as a set of hostile tortollan models with red eyes that looked equal parts sinister and endearing, and the team turned them into a boss. Three tortollans wander into the Venomous Abyss chasing relics, run afoul of an evil troll spirit, and become a deliberate moment of levity in an otherwise grim tier. Side stories on the isle also cover lingering spirits around shipwrecks and magic that afflicts and takes over some of the Amani.
Prey and Void Assault catch-up
Prey returns for a new season alongside Astalor Bloodsworn, with fresh targets, torments, and voice lines. One of its rewards is quick travel to the Coiled Isle, so paying attention to Astalor early saves you flight time all season. When Season 2 starts on August 18, the “A Slithering Threat” questline kicks off Nightmare Mode with four serpent-themed hunts. On the isle you gather Ossified Relics to light Haunted Braziers and summon Ral’kala, a group target that drops unique rewards. A permanent Nightmare Mode toggle raises the isle’s danger for players who want more challenge.
Void Assaults still work as a catch-up path, but at a lower ceiling than before. They now grant Season 2 gear a tier below what they used to, so a slot that gave Hero-level gear last season may hand out Veteran instead. The achievements, cosmetics, and gear from those systems remain earnable and stay lightly updated for the new season.
Housing updates: Blueprints and Pet Beds
Housing gets its biggest practical upgrade yet. Blueprints let you save, export, and import full house layouts, exteriors, interiors, or a single room, and share the codes cross-region except in China. You get 50 save slots plus 10 auto-save slots, imports show the required rooms, decor, and budget up front, and importing tries to handle dyed items correctly without overwriting pieces you already dyed. A new Export permission, off by default, controls who can copy your build.

Pet Beds arrive too. You can place up to 10 indoors and 5 outdoors, then assign a companion pet to each. Indoor pets can roam through the house using new navigation tech or stay put, while outdoor pets stay stationary for now. The housing level cap rises from 9 to 12, and four new Neighborhood Endeavors appear, starting with the Amani troll “Knock-off Amani” event featuring Griftah’s travelling traders.
Taken together, Curse of Ula’tek spreads across every kind of player at once. Raiders get the Venomous Abyss, Mythic+ runners get a new dungeon pool, solo and small-group players get Delves, Lairs, and Prey, and decorators get Blueprints and Pet Beds. It is the last major update before BlizzCon 2026, and it is deliberately built so you can pick the parts you enjoy without feeling forced to do all of it every week.
