Fields of Mistria 1.0: How to Marry and Have Children

Marriage and children arrived in Fields of Mistria with the 1.0 update, so you can now settle down with a romance candidate and raise a child together on the farm. The path is short once you know the order, but it locks behind a few relationship milestones and one special item that only appears after your wedding.

Quick answer: Reach 10 hearts with a romance candidate, craft the Engagement Ring from the recipe Elsie mails you and marry them, then use the Mystical Feather from the post-wedding cutscene to agree to a family planning conversation. Saying yes gives you a child and unlocks the Parent achievement.

Requirements before you can have a child

Having a child is the final step in a chain, and marriage is a hard requirement. You cannot jump straight to a baby. Everything below happens in order, and there is no house upgrade, nursery, or crib to build first.

Reach 10 hearts and get married

Build affection with your chosen partner until you reach 10 hearts. Talk to them every day, give gifts to gain Love Points, and take them on dates. Dates raise hearts faster in the 1.0 version, so lean on them to close the gap quickly.

At the 8-heart event, choose the romance route over the best-friend route so the relationship can continue past friendship. Caldarus is the exception and offers this at 6 hearts, but only once you finish “Breaking The Final Seal.” Then push the relationship to 10 hearts.

The morning after you hit 10 hearts, Elsie mails you the Engagement Ring recipe. Read the scroll, craft the ring at a Forge, and propose. You then plan the wedding through dialogue with your fiancé, choosing the flowers, the cake, and the reception meal.

Note: Getting engaged drops everyone else you were dating down to best friends. If you want to avoid that, toggle the relevant setting before you confirm the proposal. Once you are engaged, you can no longer retrigger other candidates’ 10-heart events to collect their special items.

Get the Mystical Feather and start a family

After the wedding, keep playing as normal. A cutscene will play a few in-game weeks later and hand you the Mystical Feather. This item is what unlocks children, and it only shows up once you are married.

Use the Mystical Feather to open a family planning conversation with your spouse. Agree to it, and you will have a child, turning your household into a family of three. Declining is a valid choice, since starting a family is completely optional.

You know it worked when the “Parent” achievement unlocks after the child arrives. Children are also designed to reflect their parent, so a spouse-specific baby appears rather than a generic sprite.

Marriage and child achievements

Several Steam achievements track this relationship chain, and they unlock retroactively. An existing save gets credit for anything you have already done.

Best Friend and Romantic are the two halves of the 8-heart fork, so you can earn both in one save using different characters.

Common reasons children do not unlock

If the Feather conversation never appears, the cause is almost always a missed step earlier in the chain. Work back through the checklist below.

You picked the best-friend route at 8 hearts instead of the romance route, so the relationship never became a dating path.
You have not actually married the partner. The Engagement Ring and wedding must be finished first.
Not enough in-game time has passed since the wedding for the Mystical Feather cutscene to trigger.
You declined the family planning conversation, which is a choice rather than an automatic event.

You do not need a new save to reach any of this. Existing farms carry over with full access to the marriage and children content, so a later-year farm can start dating, marry, and raise a child right away.
