What you do in Scrooms

You play as an explorer traveling through a fantasy world built around sound. You use magical instruments to discover, catch, and collect mushroom creatures called Scrooms, then sell your catches, upgrade your gear, and hunt for rarer species, mutations, and secrets. The developers describe it as inspired by the exploration and progression systems of Fisch.

The world moves through several distinct regions. Early footage shows glowing blue mushroom trees and rustic houses, an underground crystal mine with minecart tracks, a bamboo garden with lotus flowers and lanterns, and a tall gothic hall lined with bookshelves.

Foggy biomes, waterfall bridges, and deep caverns hold glowing creatures and spirits. As you explore, you meet NPCs and take on quests that open up new areas and gear.

How catching Scrooms works

Catching is built on rhythm and sound rather than combat. When you find a Scroom, you play an instrument near it and tune a waveform frequency slider to match the creature’s pitch. A rhythm progress bar then runs, and hitting the timing cleanly lands the catch. Footage shows a rare Redcap being caught at 21.8 Hz.

Mutations change a creature’s appearance and its value, so two Scrooms of the same species are not always worth the same. Your captures are logged in the Index, which lists creatures such as Acornub, Mistdrop, Sunbrella, Funglebee, and Faebud.

Larger mushroom bosses use a different version of the same system. You play against them in an arena, matching rhythm slider bars to score a “Perfect Catch!”

Instruments and upgrades

Different instruments carry different stats and are bought and upgraded as you progress. The Adventurer’s Tambourine, for example, lists Precision +2%, Harmony 0%, Tension +10, Luck +5, Tune Speed +35%, and Resonance II. Your Equipment Bag holds the tools you have unlocked, including the Wooden Lute, Tamer’s Guitar, and Adventurer’s Tambourine.

  • Wooden Lute
  • Tamer’s Guitar
  • Adventurer’s Tambourine
  • Ocarina (used for travel and door songs)
  • Violin (used against bosses)

More instruments, islands, and mutations are planned as future content. Some gear is tied to quests, such as a piano shield that unlocks after clearing a thorn obstacle course.

Songs, travel, and quests

Songs do more than catch creatures. The Ocarina’s “Known Songs” menu lists tunes like Homeward Melody and Bloomcall, and performing one can teleport you straight to a campfire site where other players are gathered.

To travel farther, visit The Maestro to enter The Eversong, a ninth-octave hub where Wells of Light transport you straight to specific islands. For ground travel, Songtreads boots leave glowing notes underfoot and improve mobility: they enable double jumps, gliding, and speed boosts for reaching restricted zones. Play the Song of Passage on the Ocarina before a carved door bearing a treble clef to open hidden passages.

Quests vary in form. They include a shifting library maze where a scary Scroom chases you, memory rune puzzles, and obstacle courses that reward unique instruments. NPCs break up the exploration too, like a chef who guards his cauldron with “Shoo! No amateurs in my kitchen.”
