He carries four hidden traits that decide whether a quest earns you Nobility or costs it, so where you send him matters far more than his stat sheet suggests.

How to recruit Gwendan in Sovereign Tower
Gwendan is one of Villador’s starting knights and appears as a candidacy on Cycle 3 with no prerequisites attached. There is no faction threshold, no county alliance, and no quest chain to clear first.
Act 1 caps the Round Table at 6 knights, so if the seat is full you will need to plan around it before Cycle 3 rather than turning him away.
Gwendan’s stats, traits, and preferences
Gwendan starts at Level 1 with a Charisma-heavy spread and low armour. His hidden traits are the part that catches players out, because two of them quietly cancel each other on Diplomacy while a third punishes crowded quests.

Bucolic Diplomacy is his standout quest
Bucolic Diplomacy normally pays 5 gold and +1 Nobles. Send Gwendan and it jumps to 150 gold and +2 Nobles with no armour damage, because the Villador emissary is his aunt Gwendolen and recognises her nephew. She is pleased enough with him tending her petunias to hand over extra coin.
Two quests that will punish an unreformed Gwendan
The Stolen Tiara usually gives 75 gold and +2 Nobles. Send an unreformed Gwendan and it fails outright and drains 2 points of Nobility, with the debrief implying he simply pocketed the tiara. Unassign him from it until he is reformed.
A Spider in a Cave costs him 2–5 armour damage and pays 45 gold instead of 110, which fits his Fear of the Dark against the quest’s Cave condition. As a general rule, avoid Cave and At Night quests while he is unreformed, since Fear of the Dark applies −1 there.
Note: Virtual Currency has a stronger Reformed outcome written in (+2 Nobles, 120 gold, +5 tax), but testers report it is not firing as of August 11, 2026. Treat the Reformed bonus on that quest as unavailable for now.
The goose quest is really the route to Chester
On The Clean Keeper Goose Part 2, the correct knight depends on how the eggs are described. All three options open the same branch and pay just 1 gold, so the real payoff is recruiting Chester afterward.

Affinity: stop him quitting and raise it
Affinity runs from −10 to +10 and starts at 0. A knight resigns at −7, and only Alwena and Ari never leave. For Gwendan, affinity is not just about resignation; it drives his entire storyline, so keeping it climbing matters twice over.

If he is close to quitting, send a Croque-Monsieur or Crêpe two cycles in a row. That is +3, enough to pull almost any knight off the resignation line. Then queue a Competition or Nobles quest and stop assigning him Relic Recovery.
Reformed vs Repaid: which ending to chase
Push Gwendan’s affinity up and a debt collector eventually appears. When the debt is raised with you, letting him leave the Round Table to pay it off resolves the money side of his story. That path, Repaid, is not the same as Reformed.
Reformed is the outcome worth targeting. It rebuilds him into 7 STR / 4 AGI / 9 CHA / 2 MAG / 4 WIT / 1 LCK and rewrites his traits:
- +2 Strength, +1 Wits, +1 Charisma
- Removes Noble Soul, Arrogant, Fear of the Dark, and In Debt
- Adds True Noble Soul, which scores off every satisfaction category instead of only Nobility
- Switches off all three of his bad special quest outcomes
Repaid only clears In Debt. He keeps the ego, the Arrogant trait, and the Fear of the Dark. A separate story path instead grants +8 Magic, raising him from 2 to 10.
His conversations fork at Affinity 3 into a humble or a pretentious version of himself, and Reformed unlocks more talks at 5 and 8. Reaching that point earns the achievement “Make Gwendan overcome his personal issues.” You will know Reformed has fired when his trait list swaps in True Noble Soul and his stats update on the character screen.
Can Gwendan die? Patch 1.0.8 changes the answer
Yes, but only since Patch 1.0.8, released 10 August 2026. The patch fixed an issue that made Gwendan immortal and impossible to kill, and it also corrected an event where Gwendolen mourned his death twice. Older guides claiming he cannot die are out of date.
Death now works the same for him as for anyone. Failed assignments damage armour, and a knight whose armour reaches zero dies permanently. Gwendan starts on only 6 armour, and the blacksmith repairs one knight per cycle, so repair him early, keep him off Cave and At Night quests while unreformed, and remember the Demon’s rewind is there if it goes wrong.
Handled well, Gwendan turns from a liability who loses you a tiara into one of the stronger all-round knights in the game.
