How to Recruit Chester in Sovereign Tower (Clean Keeper Goose Quest)

The two-stage goose quest, the dialogue mistake that blocks him, and how his fully random stats work.

Chester is an Act 1 knight in Sovereign Tower who joins your Round Table through a two-part goose crisis and then behaves like a living dice roll for the rest of your reign. He is a Milkford local who turns up desperate to bathe because a war goose has taken over the public baths, and he refuses to leave until a real knight handles the bird.

Quick answer: Recruit Chester by finishing both stages of The Clean Keeper Goose. Accept the quest when he first visits, send a knight after the goose in Part 1, then send Gwendan to claim the golden eggs in Part 2. When Chester returns to join, do not pick the “You’re Welcome” dialogue option — let the scene finish and he joins your court.

Recruit Chester through the Clean Keeper Goose quest chain

Chester appears during an audience in Act 1, so you can pick him up early. He complains about his odor and the goose that seized the baths. Accepting his problem starts The Clean Keeper Goose. If you instead hand him gold to send him away, you skip the whole chain and never recruit him.

Take the quest when Chester first raises the goose problem, then send a knight to deal with the bird. The knight will not kill it, because the goose is guarding its eggs. This closes out phase one.
Wait for Chester to come back. He returns still unwashed, since the goose and its eggs are exactly where he left them. Hearing him out opens The Clean Keeper Goose, Part 2.
Chester wanting help
On Part 2, send Gwendan to claim the eggs. The eggs turn out to be made of gold, which resolves the situation and completes the chain.
When Chester arrives to thank you, do not click “You’re Welcome.” Let the dialogue play out on its own. Choosing that line breaks the recruitment scene. Once the conversation ends properly, Chester joins the Round Table.

You know it worked when Chester appears on your roster as a full knight rather than leaving after the exchange. If he walks off instead of joining, the usual cause is the “You’re Welcome” option or paying him off during the first audience instead of accepting the quest.

Chester’s stats and hidden attributes

Chester arrives at maximum level, so there is no leveling curve to manage. His defining trait is that his core stats are not fixed. Every time the game checks a stat, it rolls a fresh value between 0 and 15. Strength, Agility, Charisma, Magic, Wits, and Luck are all re-rolled on each check, which is why the numbers on his character sheet are never a reliable read of what he will bring to a quest.

Level15 (arrives maxed)

Core statsRandom 0–15, re-rolled on every check
Happy To Be HereEnjoys all quest types, +1.0 affinity per assignment

His hidden attribute, Happy To Be Here, means he never resents the type of quest you assign. Any mission gives him +1.0 affinity, so he stays content no matter how you use him.

Chester’s favorite meals

Chester likes every meal in the game, which makes him the cheapest knight to keep happy. Feeding him anything grants the full +1.5 affinity and a +0.5 quest score bonus, so you never have to track his preferences.

Special quest outcomes for Chester

Chester has a unique result on The Great Duel in Almora. Send him and he can win the duel outright, which lets the jester become the new Count of Almor. You still collect the Almor Shield, 200 gold, and the standard consequences that follow the duel. There is also a “Chester testimony” knight quest in Tower City, but that one is mostly flavor.

How to use Chester effectively

Because he enjoys every quest type, Chester is one of the safest knights to keep long-term. He rarely resigns, so he works well as an affinity anchor on your roster. His randomness also makes him a gamble when a quest has a stat threshold. Send him and hope the check rolls high, though a low roll can occasionally help. A 0 Wits result, for example, fits the False Bank quest.

  • Affinity anchor: He likes any assignment, so he stays loyal with minimal upkeep.
  • Stat gamble: Useful when you need a high roll and can absorb a miss.
  • Team filler: Pairing him with reliable knights averages out his variance on important quests.

Treat his character sheet as a snapshot, not a promise, since the numbers change the moment the game rolls a check. Recruit him early through the goose quest, keep him fed for free affinity, and bring him along on the runs where you can afford the swing rather than building your whole strategy around him.
