The Scalding Hook is a stage seven fishing rod in Fisch that dropped alongside The Deep update on August 8, 2026. It is a quest reward, not a craft, and you unlock it by finishing a short chain handed out by an NPC deep in the new underwater biome. The payoff is a high-luck rod built around ramping progress speed and a strong Scalded mutation roll.

Quick answer: Dive into the Lower Deep region of The Deep, travel to coordinates 1610, -2830, -11765, and complete every quest offered by the Vesper of the Deep NPC (labeled Fester of the Deep in some quest UIs). The Scalding Hook is awarded when the final quest is turned in.

Scalding Hook stats and passives

The rod leans on Luck and a progress-speed passive that builds while you are actively reeling. Its Max Kg cap of 400,000 kg is the main constraint, so it handles heavy progress fights well but cannot pull the game’s true infinite-weight fish. It also has a chance to hook ghost-type fish as an extra catch.

The mutation and progress mechanics are what set this rod apart. It has a 59.5% chance to apply Scalded (9× multiplier) once you have at least +35% Forced Progress Speed. That Forced Progress Speed builds at +6% per second while a fish is being caught, up to a +35% ceiling, and drains at -6% per second when it is not. On top of that, the rod carries a flat +20% Progress Speed.

Reach the Vesper of the Deep NPC

The NPC only appears in the Lower Deep, a lower zone within The Deep. You need a boat to sail out and then a dive to get under. Here is the fastest route.

After spawning in, talk to the Shipwright to spawn a boat and board it.

Sail toward the northernmost edge of the map until you reach the boat marking the entrance to The Deep.
Dive into the water to descend from the Outer Deep into the Lower Deep, then follow the coordinates 1610, -2830, -11765 to find the Vesper of the Deep and start the quest chain.

Note: The quest giver is listed as Vesper of the Deep in update notes, but some players see the name Fester of the Deep on their in-game quest panel. It is the same NPC in the same spot, so use whatever name your quest UI shows.

Complete the quest chain

Interacting with the NPC opens two quests that must both be cleared. The first is straightforward fishing. The second requires a Harpoon Gun you will need to craft.

Quest 1: Thermal Adaptations

Catch 15 fish anywhere in the Lower Deep. Any rod works for this, so just fish in the region until the counter fills.

Quest 2: Scalded Abyss

This quest has two objectives. You must catch 15 Mythical, Exotic, or Secret fish using the Titanic Scalder Harpoon Gun, and separately obtain 8 fish in the Lower Deep with any rod. The rarity requirement is the real gate, since it forces you to hunt higher-tier fish with the specific harpoon.

Craft the Titanic Scalder

The Titanic Scalder is the Harpoon Gun required for Quest 2. You build it at the Ancient Archives anvil using the materials below.

Thermal Harpoon1
Heat-Proof Metal1

Once the Titanic Scalder is built, equip it and use it to land the 15 Mythical, Exotic, or Secret fish the quest asks for.

Confirming the unlock

When you turn in the final Vesper of the Deep quest, the Scalding Hook is granted and lands in your Equipment Bag, where you can equip it like any other rod. If it has not appeared, the usual reason is an unfinished objective, most often the 15 rarity-locked catches in Quest 2, so check your quest tracker and make sure every counter is complete before expecting the reward.
