Edge of Survival is the third-person shooter challenge mode added in Genshin Impact 7.0, run from the shooting range aboard your train in Snezhnaya. It stays locked until you finish a specific set of open-world tasks, and the last step in particular is easy to trip over if you try it in the wrong order.

Quick answer: Progress the “Everwinter Without Mercy” Archon Quest until you can summon your train, clear two open-world Shadow Realm challenges to pick up the “The Shooting Range and the Deep Shadow Realm” World Quest, then interact with the Void portal inside the train to play the unlock cutscene.

Requirements before you can start

You need to be far enough into the Snezhnaya story for the train system to be active. Push through the Archon Quest Chapter VII: Act I “Everwinter Without Mercy” until the game lets you summon your own train on the railway tracks. Without the train, there is no shooting range and no Void portal to interact with.

You also need access to the Eye of Graeae, which is what calls the train. Once you have it, the rest of the unlock takes place across the purple Shadow Realm areas on the Snezhnaya map and inside the train itself.

Steps to unlock Edge of Survival

Summon your train. Open the Eye of Graeae from your inventory or hotbar to bring up the character menu, then select “Call Train” in the bottom-left corner.
Before boarding, look at your Snezhnaya map for purple patches. Each patch marks a Shadow Realm you can dive into and fight enemies in third-person shooter mode.
Travel to a purple patch and find the void tears inside it. Interact with a tear to enter the Shadow Realm, then clear the objective by defeating every enemy in shooter mode.

Complete two of these open-world Shadow Realm challenges. Finishing the second one grants the World Quest “The Shooting Range and the Deep Shadow Realm,” which directs you to enter the shooting range.

Board the train and interact with the Void portal inside it. With the World Quest active, this triggers a cutscene between the Traveler, Paimon, and the Eye of Graeae in the Shooting Range.
Watch the cutscene through to the end. When it finishes, Edge of Survival unlocks, and you can interact with the large portal inside the Shooting Range to start challenges with your firearms and grenades.

How to confirm it worked

You have unlocked the mode when the “Edge of Survival – Unlocked” notification appears after the cutscene. From that point, the large portal in the Shooting Range becomes interactable, and you can reach the challenge quickly through the Snezhnaya Adventure Journal.

Note: If you interact with the train’s Void portal before completing the two open-world Shadow Realm challenges, nothing happens. The portal only starts the unlock cutscene once “The Shooting Range and the Deep Shadow Realm” World Quest is in your log, so pick up the quest first and try the portal again.

Which Shadow Realms unlock each stage

The stages you can play in Edge of Survival depend on which specific Shadow Realms you have cleared. Three stages open up through the tasks below.

StageUnlock requirement
Formation BreakerClear the Shadow Realm in Flamechaser Valley
Close-Quarter FrenzyClear the Shadow Realm in Fellfrost Peak
Frigid StormProgress the “On One Side a Palace, On the Other a Tomb” World Quest

How Edge of Survival plays

Each stage drops you into a shooter arena where the goal is to defeat as many enemies as possible before the timer runs out. Every kill adds points and extends your remaining time, and stronger enemies award more of both. Chaining defeats keeps a streak going for bonus points, and clearing every enemy before time expires grants extra points based on the time left at your final kill.

Before a run starts, you can apply Difficulty Clauses that raise enemy HP, ATK, and combat skills. Higher difficulty means more points per defeat, and your total Challenge Score determines how many medals you earn. Each stage also has a Frontrunners’ Edge board that shows how your friends and other Travelers are scoring.

Edge of Survival rewards

Challenge Score thresholds hand out one-time stage rewards. The higher your score, the more you collect.

Challenge ScoreRewards

200,000Primogem x15, Mystic Enhancement Ore x3, Mora x20,000

Once the mode is open, running its stages is also the main way to gather blueprints and mods for your assault rifle and grenade launcher, so it is worth revisiting the portal after each new Shadow Realm you clear.
