Almost everyone locking in a Grand Theft Auto VI pre-order is skipping the cheaper option. The $100 Ultimate Edition is pulling in the overwhelming majority of early sales, leaving the $80 Standard Edition as a distant second before the game has even launched.
Quick answer: The $100 Ultimate Edition accounts for roughly 89% of GTA 6 pre-orders on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, far above the 10–20% premium share that new games normally see.
The 89% split, platform by platform
Digital intelligence firm Sensor Tower tallied the estimates, and the numbers barely move between consoles. Xbox buyers lean into the premium edition slightly harder than PlayStation buyers, but both sit near 90%.
| Platform | Ultimate Edition share of pre-orders |
|---|---|
| Xbox Series X/S | 90% |
| PlayStation 5 | 88.5% |
| Combined | 89% |
Sensor Tower’s live GTA6 sales tracker currently counts about 4.3 million pre-orders, with 77% placed on PlayStation and 23% on Xbox. So while Xbox owners are more likely to pick the premium edition, PlayStation is driving the raw volume.

The gap between the two editions is only $20, and Rockstar has packed real content behind that jump rather than throwaway extras. The Ultimate Edition includes premium vehicles, weapons, and apparel, plus a custom mod shop and clothing stores that Standard Edition owners cannot reach at all.
Some of those unlocks are gameplay content, not just cosmetics. The premium version opens up extra missions, businesses, customization options, and specific Vice City shops. Rockstar has described it as much more than an early-unlock pack, and that framing appears to be landing.
| Edition | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $80 | Full single-player campaign, the Leonida and Vice City open world, and the Vintage Vice City Pack with pre-order |
| Ultimate | $100 | Everything in Standard, plus exclusive vehicles, weapons, apparel, extra missions and businesses, customization options, and locked shops such as the Stock 305 Clothing Store and One-Eyed Willie’s Mod Shop |
Both editions come with the Vintage Vice City Pack as a pre-order bonus, so that perk is not the deciding factor. The pull is the mod shop, the extra cars, and the shops you simply cannot access on the base version.
How unusual an 89% premium share really is
Special editions always sell well during a pre-order window, because early buyers tend to be the most dedicated fans. Even so, Karl Kontus, SVP and GM of Video Game Insights at Sensor Tower, called this figure unlike anything he has tracked.
A 50% premium share during preorders is a great number. Typical premium shares for games tend to be at around 10–20%. That being said, I have never seen a 90% premium share before.
Kontus credits the pricing. At $80, the Standard Edition already sits above the usual $70 baseline, so the extra $20 for a meaningfully bigger package feels like an easy upgrade. For many players this is the one must-buy game of the year, and they want the full version out of the gate.
The data lines up with what Take-Two has been saying. CEO Strauss Zelnick described the pre-order numbers as “unprecedented and astonishing” and noted that early demand was skewing heavily toward the premium edition. Insider figures circulating earlier had pegged the Ultimate Edition at roughly 72% of pre-orders, so the share has only climbed since then.
Whether 89% holds through launch
Expect the premium share to slide as launch nears. Kontus thinks the split will move closer to 50/50 once Rockstar’s full marketing push pulls in casual players, most of whom buy in the final week before release. He still expects the Ultimate Edition to stay well above the industry norm.
Total pre-order volume is harder to pin down. A “normal” trajectory would take today’s 4.3 million pre-orders past 40 million by launch, but Kontus believes the current figures are frontloaded and that the real number could settle closer to 25 million. Even that would be an unprecedented result. For scale, Cyberpunk 2077 announced 8 million pre-orders at launch, and 25 million GTA 6 pre-orders would translate to around $2 billion in sales before the game is even out.
GTA 6 pre-order and release timeline
Pre-orders opened on June 25, 2026, when Rockstar confirmed pricing and bonuses for both editions. If you want to play at launch, plan around the preload date rather than waiting for a day-one download that will run long under launch-day server strain.
| Milestone | Date |
|---|---|
| Pre-orders open | June 25, 2026 |
| Extended Look (Netflix) | August 27, 2026 |
| Preload begins | November 12, 2026 |
| Launch (PS5, Xbox Series X/S) | November 19, 2026 |
The upcoming Extended Look on Netflix, set for August 27, 2026, is the next major reveal and may finally show more of the map. It also marks the point where Rockstar’s wider marketing kicks in, which is exactly when analysts expect casual buyers to start narrowing that lopsided edition split.

One more wrinkle worth knowing before you order: the physical version ships as a download code in the box rather than a disc, so there is no real stock limit on pre-orders. Whether you go Standard or Ultimate, the copy you buy is digital either way.
