Voltaic Essence is a key item in Mortal Shell 2 that the game hands you without ever explaining its purpose. It drops from the Starved Harridan boss in the Vestige of Infinity, together with the Voltaic Amber Tarstone, and then sits quietly in your inventory. It is not decoration and it is not a crafting material. It is a passive key that changes how parts of the world react to you.

Quick answer: Keep Voltaic Essence in your inventory and it works on its own. It unlocks the sealed door in the southern part of the Starved Harridan arena and triggers lightning spires in the Vestige of Infinity and Silent Steps, which unpetrify nearby enemies so they come alive and attack.

How Voltaic Essence works

Voltaic Essence is a passive item. You do not equip it, select it, or activate it from a menu. Once it is in your inventory, its effects fire automatically whenever you are close to the objects it interacts with. It behaves the same way Mether’s Breath does, so there is no button to press.

It has two functions. It opens a specific locked door in the Vestige of Infinity, and it powers lightning spires that release petrified enemies frozen around them.

The sealed door in the Starved Harridan arena

The door tied to Voltaic Essence sits in the southern part of the Starved Harridan’s boss arena. It stays closed until you beat the boss. The moment the fight ends and you claim the Essence, the southern path that was blocked opens up.

Follow that southern path straight ahead and it leads to the Gate of Infinity beacon and the southernmost Corrupted Gate. That gate is where you take on Sir Isaac, the Scholar-Prince, one of the game’s major bosses. If the door has opened for you, the Essence is doing its job.

Lightning spires and unpetrified enemies

The second use is powering lightning spires. These are found in the Vestige of Infinity and in the Silent Steps area, which is the white part of the map. To trigger one, simply walk toward it while carrying Voltaic Essence.

Once you are close enough, the Essence sparks the spire to life. The petrified enemies standing around it then wake up, become active, and turn hostile. Expect a fight the instant a spire lights up, since the statues near it will immediately move and attack.

How to get Voltaic Essence

Voltaic Essence is one of the two rewards for defeating the Starved Harridan boss in the Vestige of Infinity. The area sits in the southern part of the map, directly south of the Castigator’s Keep region.

Reach the Vestige of Infinity. Take the elevator south of the Castigator’s Keep beacon, near the Hall of Murmurs dungeon, or use the path east of the Gate of Mammon beacon and hop across the small islands along the way.
Defeat the Starved Harridan in its arena. Clearing the fight rewards you with both the Voltaic Essence and the Voltaic Amber Tarstone, and it opens the sealed southern door of the arena.

With the Essence secured, you do not need to do anything else to use it. Explore the Vestige of Infinity and the Silent Steps, and it will open its door and charge every lightning spire you approach on its own.
