Grounded 2 Into the Abyss: How to Get the Calcined Snail Fragment

The Calcined Snail Fragment is a Tier 3 material added to Grounded 2 with the Into the Abyss update. It is a garden snail fragment roasted in a Kiln and infused with Unstable Goo, and you need it to craft the three-piece Shell Shocker armor set.

Quick answer: Build a Kiln, then combine 1 Garden Snail Fragment and 1 Unstable Goo in its crafting menu and wait for the bake to finish to receive one Calcined Snail Fragment.

Calcined Snail Fragment recipe and what it makes

The fragment is not something you find in the world. It is a refined material crafted only at the Kiln from two ingredients. Once you have the station and the parts, each craft turns one snail fragment and one goo into a single Calcined Snail Fragment.

Unlock and build the Kiln

The Kiln is the only station that bakes the Calcined Snail Fragment, so it comes first. Its recipe appears after you scan a Fire Brick at a Resource Analyzer, which sits at the end of the Phantom Quartz chain. In short, mine Phantom Quartz beneath Gnarly Bark, grind it into Crushed Quartz at the Quern, bake a Fire Brick in an Oven, then analyze that brick to unlock the Kiln.

Once the blueprint is available, open the Building Menu and place the Kiln using the following materials.

Note: Building eight Fire Bricks for the Kiln means gathering plenty of Clay and Phantom Quartz up front, since every Fire Brick uses one Crushed Quartz. Horsetail Stem grows around Skunk Pond, both above and below the waterline.

Get Garden Snail Fragments

Garden Snails roam several spots in The Park, and their shells are the source of the fragments. Set your resource scanner to Garden Snail Fragment on the map to mark reliable snail spawns, with dependable clusters around the Ice Cream Cart, Gnarly Bark, and Skunk Pond.

Track down a Garden Snail using the map markers and defeat it. A bow or charged attacks make quick work of the smaller Baby Garden Snails if you want faster runs.

Harvest the defeated snail’s remains, then hit the Garden Snail Shell with a hammer to bust it into pieces. Pick up the Garden Snail Fragments that break off the shell.

You only need one Garden Snail Fragment per Calcined Snail Fragment, but stocking a few at once saves repeat trips when you are crafting the full armor set.

Craft Unstable Goo

The second ingredient is Unstable Goo, made at the Oven rather than the Kiln. Open the Oven menu under Misc and craft the goo, which yields three per batch. One batch covers three Calcined Snail Fragments.

Bake the Calcined Snail Fragment at the Kiln

Interact with your built Kiln and select the Calcined Snail Fragment recipe. Confirm you are holding at least one Garden Snail Fragment and one Unstable Goo before you queue it.

Add the fragment to the Kiln’s baking queue and let it process. When the bake finishes, collect the finished Calcined Snail Fragment from the station.

You will know it worked when the finished Calcined Snail Fragment lands in your inventory. If the recipe does not appear at the Kiln, the usual causes are a missing ingredient in your inventory or an empty crafting station slot. Repeat the bake for each fragment you need, since a complete Shell Shocker set consumes several.

With the Kiln standing and a steady supply of snail fragments and Unstable Goo, the Calcined Snail Fragment becomes a repeatable craft rather than a one-off. Keep a small stock of both ingredients on hand and you can bake as many as the Shell Shocker Casque, Plastron, and Greaves require in a single sitting.
