The Tarred Fragment is an Ability Tarstone in Mortal Shell 2 that turns your sidearm into a spinning projectile launcher. It sits in the Sanguine Caverns, an area you can reach early, and it drops from a single mini-boss rather than a hidden chest.
Quick answer: Cleanse the Stonebled Gate beacon in the Sanguine Caverns, use it to fast travel to the Sanguine Shoreline, then defeat the Tarblighted Sinner in the cave arena to receive the Tarred Fragment.
What the Tarred Fragment does
The Tarred Fragment is an Ability-type Tarstone, so it can only be slotted into a Sidearm. When activated it spends 50 Resolve to fire several tethered projectiles that spin at high speed around a point. Because it is an Ability stone, it shares the two Ability slots with your other equipped Ability Tarstones.
| Level | Effect |
|---|---|
| 1 | Consume 50 Resolve to fire multiple tethered projectiles, spinning at high speed |
| 2 | The tethered projectiles spin for 6 seconds |
| 3 | The tethered projectiles spin for 8 seconds |
| 4 | The tethered projectiles cover 150% the range |

Confirming you got it
You have the stone once the Tarred Fragment shows up under the Ability Tarstones in your inventory. To use it, equip it to a Sidearm through the Tarstone menu. None of the Tarstones in the game are missable, so if you leave the area you can return later in free-roam and still claim it.
Upgrading the Tarred Fragment
Upgrades happen at the Tarforge next to Franz in Marrow Keep, but you first need the Etching Needles to unlock Tarstone leveling. The Etching Needles sit in a bone chest just before the Magdalena, the Lady of the Woods boss fight. When you spot Ruk past the bridge, drop through the opening and turn right before the tunnel to loot the chest.
Tarstones gain experience only while they are equipped in a weapon or sidearm as you kill enemies. Once the XP bar fills, return to Franz to level the Tarred Fragment. The first upgrade costs 100 coins and grants a Tarcore, while pushing it to the final level requires spending six Tarcore. Leveling other Tarstones from 1 to 2 is the main way to farm the Tarcore you need to max the ones you actually run.
Note: The stone is not required for the Stoned trophy on its own, but its spinning-projectile ability pairs well with sidearm-focused Support stones like Deadeye Stone, which also comes from the Sanguine Caverns.
