The “Upgrade your hand” objective in Clean all the leaves! trips up a lot of new players, because the wording sounds like it wants a new tool. It doesn’t. The quest tracks a purchase inside the Hand section of the upgrade menu, and the cheapest option clears it instantly.
Quick answer: Press Tab to open your journal, switch to the Upgrades tab, find the HAND section, and buy either Dexterity or Grasp for $0.50. The quest marks complete the moment the purchase goes through.
What the quest actually wants
The objective is not asking you to buy a rake or a leaf blower. It only checks whether you have purchased an upgrade tied to your character’s hands. Those hand upgrades live in the same menu you use for tool improvements, which is why people miss them and start saving cash for the wrong thing.
You can see the quest listed as “Upgrade your hand (0/1)” in your journal. Any single hand upgrade turns that counter to 1/1, so there is no need to spend more than the minimum.

Tab key on PC to open your journal. This is the book menu that shows your current objectives, so you can confirm the hand upgrade quest is still active. What each hand upgrade does
Since you’re paying for one anyway, it helps to know what you’re getting. The two $0.50 upgrades both improve raw collection speed, while the $1.00 option changes how you interact with leaves.
| Upgrade | Cost | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Dexterity | $0.50 | Shortens the delay between pickups (0.50s down to 0.32s across levels) |
| Grasp | $0.50 | Picks up more leaves at once (1 leaf up to 2, then 4) |
| Hold | $1.00 | Lets you hold the button to collect instead of clicking |
Grasp is the strongest early pick if you plan to keep collecting by hand, because pulling in multiple leaves per action speeds up your first few zones. Dexterity is a fine alternative and costs the same.
How to confirm it worked
The moment the purchase completes, the “Upgrade your hand” objective flips to checked off in your journal. You can close the menu and return to cleaning, and the quest will no longer appear as active.
If it doesn’t register, the usual cause is buying from the wrong section. Purchasing a rake or leaf blower upgrade will not count. Make sure the upgrade you bought came from the HAND section specifically.

With the quest cleared, you can carry on filling your bag and selling leaves for cash. The hand upgrades you just bought keep paying off, since faster pickups and larger grabs shorten every trip you make before you can afford a rake or leaf blower.
