The exact loop, class picks, and border-fight prep that carry a solo run from the starter house all the way to Mexico.

RUNAWAYS drops you into the country as a wanted criminal with one job: rob your way south until you cross into Mexico. The route runs through Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, with police pressure climbing at every stop. Winning is less about firepower and more about pacing, fuel, and knowing when to leave loot behind.

Quick answer: Loot houses and stores for valuables, sell at the pawn shop, keep the car fueled and repaired, and cross each state line only when your gas and vehicle health are high. At the final Mexico border, start the gate console, survive the two-minute timer using medkits and armor, then run through the barrier when it opens to trigger the “YOU ESCAPED!” screen.

The core loop that gets you to Mexico

Every run repeats the same four actions: rob, pawn, refuel, and move on. Houses, stores, ATMs, and vaults hold the money. Pawn shops turn loot into cash and stock the gear you need. Gas stations keep the car alive. The moment police pressure spikes, you drive out of the search radius and reset it in the next town.

When you first spawn, follow the green arrows on the floor. Your contact, Hugh Dunnit, walks you through the opening robbery, the first pawn shop trip, and your first refuel. That tutorial teaches the loop without throwing everything at you at once.

Pawn shops appear on your map as Cash America or Trash America locations. That is where you sell what you steal and buy upgrades between raids.

Controls you need before the first chase

The control scheme is short, but fumbling a key during a police pit maneuver ends runs. Memorize these before you commit your first crime.

SprintShift

Punch / shootLeft Mouse Button
Drop itemX

CrouchC

Two keys matter most on the road. Press Q to strap paintings, PCs, and other bulky items to the car roof when your inventory is full. Crouch with C near people to stay undetected while you loot.

Pick the right class first

Classes are permanent purchases from the Class NPC in the lobby. They set your speed, melee power, health, and starting loadout before a run even begins. Speed decides whether you outrun a chase, and a starting backpack decides how much loot you can carry from the first town.

ClassCostKey stats
Brawler25k+5% melee, -10% speed
Scout35k+10% speed, -5% melee, -20% health
Old CEO40k-5% speed, -15% health
Smuggler45k+20% speed, -10% melee, Small Backpack + Crowbar
Contractor70k+10% melee, +5% health, -5% speed
Medic120k+20% health, -5% speed
Gang Member170k+10% speed, -5% health, Small Backpack + MAC
Bounty Hunter300k+20% speed, +10% melee
Breacher550k+40% melee, Medium Backpack + Shotgun + C4
Juggernaut850k+100% health, -20% speed, Minigun

Buy the Smuggler at 45,000 credits first. It gives the joint-highest speed bonus (+20%) plus a Small Backpack and Crowbar from the start, so you can crack ATMs almost immediately. The -10% melee penalty barely matters because winning runs is about grabbing loot and leaving, not fighting.

Longer term, Bounty Hunter (300k) has a purely positive stat line and works everywhere. Breacher (550k) specializes in vaults thanks to its C4 and larger backpack. Juggernaut (850k) trades speed for +100% health, which makes it the strongest choice for the final border fight.

What to steal and what to skip

Loot value varies wildly. As a rule, items you have to click and drag are worth far more than items you pick up instantly, so grab those first. Guitars are one of the best early targets and sell for around 1.3k. Skip trash bags, which pay almost nothing.

LootWhy grab it
Paintings (especially Van Gogh)Hundreds to thousands each; attach to the roof
Computers / PCsConsistently high value
GuitarsAround 1.3k; top early-game grab
Jewelry (diamonds, rings, gold)Excellent value for the space they take
WalletsFast, easy pickups
ATMs, vaults, cash registersBreak for instant cash, no pawn trip needed

Large items cannot go in your inventory even with backpack upgrades, and the car has no trunk. Attach them to the roof with Q instead. If your car is destroyed, everything strapped to it is lost, so sell bulky loot at the next pawn shop rather than hauling it across a state line.

The opening: first gas station and first town

Clear the starter house of everything marked with green arrows, then get in the car. This is free loot with no risk.
At the first gas station you have roughly six minutes before police backup arrives. Refuel, then loot the whole store and grab a red gas can if one is nearby. Every credit counts this early.
In the first town, rob every house you can. The backup timer starts when you commit a crime, giving you about five minutes to clear the area before you need to leave.
Sell your haul at Trash America, then buy a crowbar and a backpack as your first two purchases. The crowbar (around $800) breaks ATMs and safes quickly, and the backpack lets you carry more per trip.

Tip: Slow down inside the pawn menu. It is easy to accidentally sell your own backpack or equipment when you are rushing.

Fuel, repairs, and keeping the car alive

Gas is the single resource that decides whether you reach Mexico. Fuel gets more expensive the further south you go, so budget cash for it in every town before you spend on anything else. Fill up early and often rather than waiting until the tank runs low.

Carry gas cans as backups. You can fill them at the pump and attach them to the roof, and keeping several full cans on the car is what prevents stalling on long highway stretches. When you park at a pump, hold E and watch the fuel numbers climb to confirm you are actually filling up.

The car takes damage from crashes, gunfire, and police pit maneuvers. Watch for smoke, which means repairs are due. To fix it, you need tools like Drills, found at the American Tire shop in later towns. Grab a few spares, and use one when vehicle health drops below about 40 percent so you don’t waste them.

Avoid speed traps. Drive around the cameras rather than through them to keep police attention low.

The wanted system and when to run

Your Wanted Level runs on five stars. Each crime fills them, and the more stars you carry, the faster reinforcements arrive and the tougher the cop NPCs become. There is currently no way to lower your stars mid-run, so the only fix is to leave the search area, which resets police presence once you drive clear of the radius.

Keep heat down by avoiding unnecessary fights. Killing civilians raises your wanted level faster, drawing weapons inside stores turns shopkeepers hostile, and combat pulls in more police. Crouch near people, save sprinting indoors for actual escapes, and prioritize getting out over winning a shootout.

Know when to bail. Leaving with 60 to 70 percent of a town’s loot beats getting caught with all of it. If the backup timer drops low or police numbers climb, drive out and hit the next town instead.

Crossing state lines safely

Each state border, from Kansas into Oklahoma and on into Texas, charges you with illegally crossing and sends police after you. You can drive full speed through the checkpoint gate, but it costs some car health from barrier damage. Only cross with a high fuel level and healthy vehicle, because you may need to fight off cruisers on the far side before you can refuel.

Around Kansas, it is worth buying C4 in case a town has a bank vault you want to breach, plus Light Armor for the tougher fights that start appearing. For ATMs, jumping onto the machine and breaking it from above can let you destroy it without aggroing nearby civilians.

Gear up before the final border

Skip healing items at the pawn shop. Gas station fridges hand out free health from items like Cronch, an Apple, or Hotdogs, and you can usually grab a Medic Bag or two from the counter near the register. Spend your pawn money on backpack upgrades, weapons, and armor instead.

For weapons, the Machete and Axe are strong melee picks and the Minigun leads for ranged, all offering good damage for their cost. In the final town before Mexico, fully refuel the car and every gas can, pawn any weapons and valuables you no longer need, and stock up on medkits.

For the end fight specifically, aim to arrive with heavy armor, a large backpack, and 15 or more medkits. This is the hardest part of the run, and preparation is what carries it.

Surviving the Mexico border fight

Arrive at the Mexico border station and interact with the gate console. This starts a two-minute countdown, and police and border guards pour in for the duration.
Take cover. Wait in the car until it takes damage, repair it with a Drill, and shelter inside the guard buildings when the fire gets heavy. A high-health class like Juggernaut shines here.
Lure guards out and shoot them from inside the car to exploit their targeting, and strafe while eating medkits when you drop toward a third of your health.
The barrier opens when the timer hits zero. Sprint or drive across the threshold to trigger the “YOU ESCAPED!” summary screen. That confirmation is how you know the run is won.

Codes for a free head start

A couple of active codes give early freebies. Redeem them by opening the SHOP icon on the left of the screen, going to the BUNDLES section, opening the Codes Tab near the bottom, entering the code, and pressing USE.

If a code does not register, the redemption system may not be fully live in every version. Check the official RUNAWAYS Discord for updates.

Your first win comes down to discipline, not luck. Keep the loop tight, refuel before you’re forced to, cross borders only when you’re topped up, and treat the Mexico gate as the real test you’ve been saving medkits for the whole run. Do that, and Hugh Dunnit gets his fugitive across the line.
