The nearly 30-minute gameplay reveal confirmed a six-star wanted system, an 80-hour story, character switching, and much more for the Vice City sequel.

Rockstar Games pulled back the curtain on Grand Theft Auto 6 with a gameplay-heavy presentation that ran just under 30 minutes, giving players their first real look at Jason Duval, Lucia Caminos, and the state of Leonida in motion. The footage confirmed years of speculation while adding concrete details about combat, the wanted system, activities, and how the two protagonists move through the world together.

Quick answer: GTA 6 launches November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The Extended Look confirmed six-star wanted levels, seamless character switching between Jason and Lucia, an interaction system carried over from Red Dead Redemption 2, a split health bar, and roughly an 80-hour main story.

Release time: November 19, 2026

Jason and Lucia in the world of Leonida

The reveal opened with Jason and Lucia walking through the streets together to pick someone up for a character named Boobie Ike, a nightlife entrepreneur and music producer who owns the Jack of Hearts club. Jason leads while Lucia follows, and the pair head up an elevator into the first detailed interior shown in the footage. The scene also confirmed the interaction system from Red Dead Redemption 2, with Jason petting a dog for positive karma.

Cutscenes transition into gameplay without a visible cut, and combat looked like a clear step up from GTA 5, closer to the feel of Red Dead Redemption 2. Players can switch between Jason and Lucia while freely exploring, though some story sequences temporarily lock you to one character. The switch itself is not instant. It uses the same zoom-out and zoom-in animation from GTA 5.

The two protagonists begin the story open to a romance, but you decide whether it develops. Spending time together outside of missions strengthens their bond, including shopping, exercising, exploring, visiting salons, and committing robberies. The relationship can stay platonic without blocking the main story, and building the romance does not grant statistical bonuses.

The six-star wanted system and how police track you

The six-star wanted level returns after GTA 5 capped it at five. Before police are alerted, a crime must be witnessed by an NPC or picked up by an alarm, and responding officers receive specific details about the crime and the suspects.

Escaping the police no longer clears you completely. Crime scenes stay marked as active search areas, and returning or making yourself known can reactivate your wanted level. Cops can identify you in several ways, with on-screen icons during a robbery representing a camera, clothing, a weapon, and a person silhouette.

The wanted stars also change color to signal how much the police know. During one chase, four white stars turned red as the situation escalated. After the pair swapped from a car into a van, the stars stayed red but the police could not recognize the new vehicle, allowing a clean exit. In another sequence, stars appeared black with a white outline, suggesting officers were en route but did not yet know who they were looking for.

You can also become a “good criminal” through a criminal profiling system by completing crimes efficiently. Keeping a spare outfit in a vehicle trunk lets you change your description while escaping, since the police track what you were wearing.

Combat, weapons, and the split health bar

Weapon carrying is more grounded than GTA 5, where the weapon wheel let you stash an arsenal on one character. In GTA 6 you appear limited to a primary weapon, a throwable, binoculars, a side weapon, and possibly one or two more items. Extra guns are stored in your trunk or safehouse.

A Dead Eye-style slow-motion ability makes its way into the series, much closer to the version used by John Marston and Arthur Morgan than the character-specific ability GTA 5 gave Michael. The health bar is split into two segments. Eating restores health, and the footage suggests the first segment regenerates on its own while food is needed to reach full health.

Breaking into cars offers more than one method. In one clip Jason could smash the window or use a slim jim to slide between the window and door and unlock it. Some vehicle thefts require completing a short mini-game.

Story structure and the Focus system

A recent playthrough by Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson ran roughly 80 hours, covering the main storyline plus a selection of optional objectives. The campaign is divided into multiple chapters, similar to Red Dead Redemption 2, and some optional goals can influence the narrative.

The design pushes you to explore Leonida rather than rush between missions. The line between story missions and open-world activities is intentionally blurred, and picking up a clue in the open world can lead you into a new mission. Missions often provide several ways to reach an objective or escape an area, and some vehicle missions let you choose whether to drive or shoot from the passenger seat.

A new Focus ability highlights objects and points of interest, such as a collectible or an opening for a new mission path, while also helping you avoid the police. The story includes both major and minor choices, with smaller decisions accumulating over time to produce larger consequences.

Activities across Vice City and Leonida

The footage showed a broad range of things to do outside of missions. Jason plays basketball outside his safehouse, and clips featured backyard wrestling, track races, street and dirt bike races, and car meets. Water activities are prominent, including kayaking, scuba diving, jumping into the sea, and riding fan boats. You can also base jump from high points in Vice City.

The gym system, last seen in San Andreas, returns. Exercising increases strength and muscularity, while overeating causes weight gain, and food provides a substantial health boost. An honor-style system also appears, with a small emoji showing a halo or devil horns depending on your actions.

NPCs, the phone, and social media

Leonida is built to feel populated. The game reportedly contains more than 600,000 NPC animations, compared with around 55,000 in GTA 5 and 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2. NPCs are individually art-directed and come in a wider range of heights, weights, and body types, with animations that adjust to a character’s size.

You can greet, taunt, provoke, or defuse NPCs using an expanded version of the Red Dead Redemption 2 interaction system. Some residents carry weapons and may start violence on their own, and following someone too long can make them confront you.

The phone is now a physical object in the game world rather than an overlay, and the camera moves closer to the character’s hand when it is used. Snapmatic returns as the parody of platforms such as Instagram, but Jason and Lucia cannot post their own photos because they are fugitives avoiding a digital trail. You can still browse posts, follow accounts, and read online conversations.

Streetwear shows up throughout the world, including characters wearing fake Air Jordan 1s, one pair resembling the University Blue Toe colorway, along with Air Force 1 look-alikes.

Map size, safehouses, and vehicles

Rockstar describes the map as “very big” without giving an exact measurement. Preview estimates suggest the full map could be around three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2 or roughly twice the size of GTA 5, with Vice City alone about twice as large as GTA 5’s Los Santos. The pause-screen map now uses detailed satellite imagery instead of a simplified street layout.

Safehouses behave more like the camps in Red Dead Redemption 2 than the private properties of earlier GTA games. Other characters may enter, leave, or even own the locations Jason and Lucia use, and the spaces are more interactive. You can trim or shave hair and facial hair at home, while entirely new hairstyles must be bought from salons or barbers.

Each protagonist can own several personal vehicles stored at their safehouses. Vehicle trunks are functional and can hold spare clothing and weapons. Fast travel is available through a rideshare app called Ryde Me, and you can hold full conversations with taxi passengers.

Release date and platforms

Grand Theft Auto 6 launches November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is no confirmed PC release, following Rockstar’s usual pattern of bringing its games to PC later. You can pre-order now through the official Grand Theft Auto VI site.

The full Extended Look is available on the official Rockstar Games YouTube channel and the Grand Theft Auto VI site for anyone who missed the live premiere. With the reveal confirming so many long-rumored systems, the remaining wait is now measured in weeks rather than years.
