Path of Exile 2 Duelist: How Sword Stances and Skill Gems Work Ahead of 1.0

The Strength/Dexterity Duelist joins Path of Exile 2 1.0 on December 11, 2026, built around swords and shifting combat stances.

The Strength/Dexterity Duelist joins Path of Exile 2 1.0 on December 11, 2026, built around swords and shifting combat stances.

The Duelist is the sword-focused fighter arriving with the 1.0 launch of Path of Exile 2. He hits as a Strength and Dexterity hybrid, and his whole kit is built around a new one-handed and two-handed Sword archetype that leans on combos, parries, and Stances rather than simple mindless swings.

Quick answer: The Duelist is a Strength/Dexterity class that wields Swords and shifts between Ready, Sand, and Blood Stances to unlock enhanced attacks. He becomes playable with the 1.0 full release on December 11, 2026, and his Ascendancy names stay unconfirmed until ExileCon on November 7, 2026.

Duelist class basics and weapon options

The Duelist starts at the bottom-middle of the Passive Skill Tree, the same spot as the Mercenary. That placement sits him between the Strength and Dexterity portions of the tree, so you can push into Armour, Evasion, melee, and projectile nodes without fighting the tree. In practice that gives the class a lot of build freedom despite its melee identity.

The Sword is the Duelist’s signature weapon and a brand-new archetype in Path of Exile 2. You can equip a pair of one-handed Swords for dual wielding, run a one-handed Sword alongside a Shield or Sceptre, or slot a two-handed Sword for a heavier, higher-damage option. Every Sword also has a default attack that you can amplify through Stances.

How the Stance system works

Stances are the core mechanic of Sword combat. A Stance upgrades a skill so it either fires an alternate attack or skips straight to the final hit of a combo. For example, after a few basic swings you can enter Ready Stance and release an AoE slash instead of continuing the chain. Which enhanced attack you get depends on the skill you are holding.

StanceHow to enterEffect
Ready StanceHold the button for certain Sword skills; release for the enhanced versionFires AoE slashes or jumps to the final combo hit early
Sand StanceHeavy Stun an enemy or consume a Frenzy Charge with Sand Scour, then enter Ready StanceMost Sword attacks create spinning sand disks that deal AoE damage
Blood StanceUse Bloodied Blade against a Parried enemy, then enter Ready StanceAttacks send out bloody slashes that apply Bleed

The flow matters more than any single Stance. You meet a condition, drop into Ready Stance, and then Sand or Blood Stance takes over automatically when the right trigger fires. From there, your normal skills come out as their empowered versions.

Duelist Sword skill gems

Every class in Path of Exile 2 can slot any skill gem, so these Sword skills are recommendations tuned to the Duelist rather than hard restrictions. The Sword set is unusually deep, with skills that stack Bleed, plant blades in the ground, and infuse your attacks with Lightning.

SkillWhat it does
Sword Slash (Basic)Slashes an enemy. Hold to enter Ready Stance. Enhanced by Sand and Blood Stance.
Sand ScourSteps back and slings sand, blinding foes and Heavy Stunning enemies Primed for Stun. Path into Sand Stance.
Bloodied BladeMultiple slashes that inflict Bleed. Hold to enter Ready Stance; enters Blood Stance when hitting a Parried enemy.
PerforateTriple stab that sends a piercing shockwave on the final hit. Sand Stance adds sand disks; Blood Stance adds mini novas.
IntimidateWarcry that makes your next hit deal extra Stun Buildup. Does not break Stance.
Rending DashDashes through enemies, slashing them, without breaking Stance. Consumes all Blood Loss to inflict a stronger Bleed.
HemorrhageSends out blood slashes that speed up Bleed damage on targets and build up Bloodloss.
CycloneSpins to hit surrounding enemies. Enhanced by Sand and Blood Stance, plus ground effects.
EarthrendSends a wave of blades in a line and creates at least one Buried Blade; makes a wall of blades in Ready Stance.
Blade PlungeCreates at least three Buried Blades, then detonates nearby ones. Hold to charge for more damage.
Rain of SteelCalls down a barrage of blades in an area.
Charged SlashSlashes with electrified blades and charges nearby Buried Blades with Lightning.
Blade ConduitInfuses your Sword with Lightning and leaves Shocked Ground, charging nearby Buried Blades.
World CutterHold to charge a massive slash through multiple stages, then release at max charge for a devastating hit.

Sword support gems

A set of new support gems is tied directly to the Sword archetype’s disks, blades, and parries. These let you shape whether the class scales physical damage, Lightning, or Bleed.

Support gemAttributeEffect
Eroding SandsStrSand Disks Break Armour on hit.
SandstormDexSand Disks gain 40% of damage as extra Lightning but deal less Physical damage.
Galvanising BladesDexBuried Blades grant you and nearby allies 3% more melee damage within 2 metres, up to 5 blades per target.
GougeStrYour attacks carve Flesh Chunks from bleeding targets, which explode after a short delay.
Shattering ParryDexBreak Armour when you apply the Parried debuff.

Buried Blades, Cyclone, and parrying

Two playstyle threads stand out beyond raw Stance swapping. The first is the Buried Blade loop. Earthrend, Blade Plunge, and Rain of Steel all plant blades across the ground, and Blade Plunge detonates every nearby blade for burst damage. Feed those blades Lightning with Charged Slash or Blade Conduit first, and the explosion adds Lightning damage on top.

Cyclone returns as the fan-favorite spin attack, and it reads the battlefield around it. In Sand Stance it flings sand disks, in Blood Stance or over Blood Pools it releases blood waves, and passing over elemental ground effects lets it inherit that element for extra damage. It picks up ground effects with a single pass, so it pairs naturally with the class’s own Shocked Ground and pools.

Sword Parry rounds out the defense. It is available while dual wielding Swords and has been reworked to be easier to land. If you would rather not risk a mistimed parry, equip a Shield and use Ready Stance to force one; instead of a slash, the Duelist performs a shield bash.

Ascendancy speculation

Two Ascendancy portraits have been teased, but neither name nor its passives are confirmed. The official names and full details are set for ExileCon. Until then, the artwork is the only concrete clue, which has produced a few competing reads.

Portrait clueSpeculated direction
Ragged figure holding Swords, Daggers, a Crossbow, a Spear, and a BowAn Outlaw or bandit theme with passives that reward using many weapon types; some expect a “Master-at-Arms” style build with an extra weapon set.
Sword and Shield with a glowing shield and banner (marked with a Tararthus-like emblem)A Champion or Paladin theme centered on block and banners, echoing a defensive sword-and-board fighter.

Note: treat all of the above as speculation. The banner emblem resembling the old Mercenary League logo and the shield-heavy pose are the main hints, and the actual node kits could differ once the official reveal lands.

Release date and where full details land

The Duelist becomes playable with the 1.0 full release of Path of Exile 2 on December 11, 2026, which also moves the game to a free-to-play model. The deeper reveal of the class, including confirmed Ascendancy names and skill numbers, is scheduled for ExileCon on November 7, 2026.

Registering on the official Path of Exile 2 site ahead of launch unlocks milestone cosmetic rewards, such as weapon effects, crowns, portals, and limited ornaments, distributed by email after the December 11 release. For now, the class is locked in around Swords and Stances, with the Ascendancy identities the last major piece still to be confirmed.
