PS5 Pro Stock Shortage: Where to Buy It During the GTA 6 Rush

PlayStation Direct is the main place selling the console at list price while retailers sit empty and resellers push it past $1,200.

PlayStation Direct is the main place selling the console at list price while retailers sit empty and resellers push it past $1,200.

The PS5 Pro is sold out at nearly every major US retailer right now, and the timing is not a coincidence. Interest in Grand Theft Auto 6 jumped after Rockstar’s recent extended look at the game, and a lot of that attention has landed on Sony’s most powerful console. If you want one at the official price, your options are suddenly very narrow.

Quick answer: Buy directly from PlayStation Direct at the $899 list price, which is currently the only major seller with stock. Avoid third-party listings on Amazon and Walmart charging $1,200 to $1,300.

Where to buy a PS5 Pro at list price right now

PlayStation Direct is the one reliable spot still selling the PS5 Pro at its $899 list price. Target and Best Buy are out of stock. Amazon and Walmart still show the console, but only through third-party sellers at inflated prices, not from the retailers themselves.

Availability can shift fast, so if you see the Pro in stock at the official price, treat it as a buy-now situation rather than something to sit on.

Skip the third-party markups

Resellers are the reason the console still shows up “available” on some storefronts. Third-party listings run from roughly $1,200 to $1,300, and recent eBay sales for new units have gone as high as $1,200. That is a large premium over the $899 official price for the exact same hardware.

It isn’t clear how many buyers are actually paying those rates. There is no benefit to the console itself from the markup, so paying it only makes sense if you have a hard deadline and no other stock exists.

Why demand spiked

GTA 6 is the main driver. Rockstar’s detailed look at the game renewed a huge amount of interest, and some players clearly want the most capable console in hand before it arrives. Marvel’s Wolverine, launching soon, is likely adding some pressure too, but the scale of GTA 6 attention is the bigger factor.

On top of the hype, Sony has been dealing with an ongoing supply problem for a while. A broader memory shortage has pushed hardware prices up across the board and made consoles harder to find in general. The GTA 6 surge simply landed on top of stock that was already tight.

Should you wait for a restock?

GTA 6 is set to launch on November 19, 2026, and Sony is expected to restock retailers before then. No official restock timeline has been confirmed, so treat that as an expectation rather than a promise.

If you don’t need the console immediately, waiting for retailers to refill at $899 is the reasonable move. If you want one now and PlayStation Direct is in stock, that is the path that avoids the reseller tax.

What the PS5 Pro actually adds for GTA 6

GTA 6 is confirmed to include PS5 Pro enhancements, though Rockstar has not detailed what those enhancements are yet. The gameplay shown so far ran on a base PS5 and looked strong, and it is unlikely to reach 60fps even on the Pro.

The Pro’s general advantage is running games at higher visual quality while holding steadier performance, which is why many players see it as the best way to experience the game at launch. With no PC version planned for release day, the Pro is positioned as the top-end console option until that changes.

The short version: check PlayStation Direct first, buy at $899 if it’s there, and hold off rather than pay a reseller if it isn’t. Stock should loosen before GTA 6 arrives, and the console will still be the same machine whether you get it today or after the next restock.
