Lightning is one of the more reliable damage types in Mortal Shell 2, and the Voltaic Crown is the Tarstone that puts it on your melee weapon. It is not hidden behind a puzzle chest or an offering ritual. One boss holds it, and that boss sits behind a beacon on the western side of the map.
Quick answer: Travel to the Nochtean Gate Beacon, cleanse it, fight through the Abandoned Shrine, and kill Vrago, Solikar Champion. The Voltaic Crown drops on his death with a “NEW TARSTONE ACQUIRED” prompt.
What the Voltaic Crown does
The Voltaic Crown is an Infusions-type Tarstone. Equipping it lets you spend 30 Resolve to coat your weapon in lightning damage. The catch at the start is duration. Early on the infusion burns off after a handful of strikes, so you are triggering it repeatedly during a boss fight rather than setting it once and forgetting it.
That changes as you level the stone. At its final rank the infusion stops expiring entirely, which is the version most players are chasing.
| Level | Effect |
|---|---|
| Level 1 | Consume 30 Resolve to infuse your weapon with Lightning |
| Level 2 | Infusion lasts for 4 strikes |
| Level 3 | Infusion lasts for 8 strikes |
| Level 4 | Infusion is permanent |
The Crown only slots into melee weapons, and only a few of them. Axatana, Clockwork Scythe, and Great Martyr’s Blade accept it. If your current loadout is built around something else, the stone will simply not appear as an option in the equip menu.

Note: do not confuse this with Voltaic Amber. That is a separate lightning Tarstone for Sidearms, it costs 20 Resolve instead of 30, and it comes from a completely different boss.

The stone is tied to the Nochtean Gate Beacon, out on the western side of the map. Cleansing a beacon in Mortal Shell 2 opens a challenge, and this one drops you into the Abandoned Shrine in Prisoner’s Domain. At the end of that shrine is Vrago, Solikar Champion, and he is the only thing standing between you and the Crown.

Confirming you got it
A “NEW TARSTONE ACQUIRED” banner appears on Vrago’s death. After that, the Voltaic Crown sits in your Tarstones list, and you can check it by opening the inventory and filtering to Infusions. There is no separate pickup on the ground and nothing to loot from the arena afterwards, so if the banner appeared, you have it.
The most common reason players think the stone is broken is compatibility. Equipping it to a weapon outside the supported list is not possible, so if you cannot find it in the equip screen, check what weapon you currently have out before assuming the drop failed.
Upgrading the Voltaic Crown to permanent infusion
Ranking the stone up is gated behind a quest item rather than currency alone. You need the Etching Needle, which expands what the Tarforge in Marrow Keep is willing to do, and you hand it to Franz.
Tip: swap the Crown in early rather than saving it for a specific fight. The XP only accumulates while it is slotted, so the sooner it is on your weapon, the sooner the permanent infusion tier arrives.
Nothing about the Voltaic Crown is missable. Nochtean Gate stays available, Vrago does not disappear, and the stone can be picked up in free roam after the final boss if you skipped past it on the way through. It just gets a lot more useful the earlier you commit to feeding it kills.
