The default class in Examination has no helmet, which is why night vision normally stays locked behind other roles. There is one way around that restriction, and it runs through a short errand for the NPC Yuri Scarlet inside the Itagura NPP safe zone. Finish it and the NVG battery bar appears on your classless operative like it would on any equipped class.
Quick answer: Earn the LAB_ASSISTANT badge by activating Backup Generator 1 in Sector 1, turning the valve in Reactor 4, then collecting both NVG components for Yuri Scarlet and handing them in one at a time.
Why classless players can’t use NVG by default
Classless is the role every player spawns into before picking one of the other eight. It carries an A9 Brigadier with a flashlight zip-tied to it, or a Lock-17 if your rank is Sergeant or above, plus the shared TRC-44 ‘Foxtalk’ Uplink, LNX-02 Combat Wrap, and LUM-5 “GlowCell”.
What it does not have is headgear. The NVGs tied to the One Man Army badge need a helmet to mount to, so they simply do not appear on a classless operative. The LAB_ASSISTANT badge is a separate reward that grants night vision independently of that restriction, which is what makes it useful for anyone chasing the UNDEREQUIPPED achievement while staying in the base class.

The quest itself is short, but the route to Reactor 4 puts you in front of mutated enemies. A melee weapon makes that stretch far less punishing than a pistol alone. Pulling gear from the Corpsman-Class locker in the safe zone gets you a PMS-127 Hammer along with the class kit before you head out.

Note: leaving the safe zone triggers the “YOU ARE LEAVING THE DESIGNATED SAFE ZONE” warning. That is normal and not a sign you took a wrong turn.
Generator and valve steps that unlock the quest
Yuri’s NVG task sits behind the standard site power work. You need the first backup generator online and the Reactor 4 valve turned before the component hunt becomes available.

Yuri Scarlet’s NVG component quest
With the valve done, return to the safe zone and talk to Yuri Scarlet. The task is two pickups, delivered separately. Both components sit in green crates in Sector 1 and are marked on your radar, so you are not searching blind.

How to confirm the LAB_ASSISTANT badge unlocked NVG
Two things tell you it worked. A “Badge Awarded” notification appears on screen for the {MENLO-INFANTRY-DIVISION} ['LAB_ASSISTANT'] award, and the badge entry in your Codex menu switches to “OBTAINED”.
The in-game proof is the NVG battery bar showing up on a classless character. If the bar is not there, the most likely causes are a component that was collected but never turned in, or a hand-in that skipped the return trip between the two pickups. Yuri expects the first component back before he points you at the second.
Once the badge is on your account, the night vision stays available whenever you spawn in as classless, which matters most in the unlit stretches of Sector 1 and the lower maintenance corridors where the GlowCell is otherwise your only light. It also pairs neatly with an UNDEREQUIPPED attempt, since you get vision without touching a specialized loadout.
