The Blood of Dawnwalker: How to Unlock A Hero They Deserve by Leaving the Valley

Everything the escape route to Coward's Path triggers, plus exactly what staying keeps intact.

Everything the escape route to Coward’s Path triggers, plus exactly what staying keeps intact.

Deep in Vale Sangora, the people of the valley are sealed in and left as easy prey for Brencis and his forces. That trap has a way out, and reaching it hands Coen a decision the game frames plainly. You can walk away from the whole conflict, or you can stay and fight for your family. Picking “leave” is the trigger for the hidden achievement A Hero They Deserve in The Blood of Dawnwalker.

Quick answer: At night, fast travel to the Coward’s Path Shrine on the west side of the map, use Shadowstep to cross the broken bridge toward the open door in the wall, then select [Leave the Valley forever]. The story ends immediately, and A Hero They Deserve unlocks.

Leave vs. stay: what each choice locks in

Neither option is a “correct” one. They branch into two very different outcomes, and only leaving ends the run early. Staying keeps you on Coen’s main path and the 30 in-game day clock to rescue his family from Brencis.

ChoiceWhat happens
Leave the Valley foreverThe game ends early. Coen abandons his family and everyone in Vale Sangora, and you unlock A Hero They Deserve. A special post-credits cutscene also plays.
Stay in the ValleyCoen’s journey continues as normal. You keep chasing the main quest to save his family within 30 in-game days, filling the time with side quests for companions and NPCs.

Tip: Save a manual file right before you interact with the door. If you only want the achievement, you can trigger the ending, then reload and continue the main story from that same save.

How to reach the valley exit in Coward’s Path

The exit sits past a ruined bridge in the Briar Sloughs area, west of the Coward’s Path Shrine. Getting there depends on your night-only vampiric movement, so it can be done shortly after the Prologue as long as you have the right ability unlocked.

Wait until it is nighttime. The route relies on Coen’s Shadowstep, which is only available after dark, so this will not work during the day.

Fast travel to the Coward’s Path Shrine on the west side of the map, then move toward the broken bridge. Approaching it starts the Cursed Chasm quest, which you can ignore.
Use Shadowstep to cross to the far side of the broken bridge. If your jump falls short, level up the Shadow Dweller ability once to extend Shadowstep’s distance, or climb the cliff slowly to reach the other side.
Walk west toward the open door set into the walls. Save your game before you touch it so your progress is protected.
Interact with the door. Two options appear, [Leave the Valley forever] and [Stay in the Valley]. Choose “Leave the Valley forever” to end the game and earn the achievement.

What unlocks and how to confirm it worked

Choosing to leave ends Coen’s story on the spot. You will get the hidden A Hero They Deserve achievement for escaping Vale Sangora and walking away from the responsibility of saving anyone. If this is your first time finishing the game, the credits also award the broader The Blood of Dawnwalker achievement for completing the story.

This is counted as one of the early endings. The game treats it as completing the story for that achievement, but it does not count toward Duelist difficulty completion, which specifically requires saving the people of Laslea through one of the four standard endings.

If the achievement does not pop, the usual reasons are simple. You attempted it during the day when Shadowstep was unavailable, you never actually crossed the broken bridge, or you selected “Stay in the Valley” at the prompt.

The post-credits cutscene

Ending the game this way is not just an anticlimax. Whether you skip or sit through the credits, a special scene plays afterward. It shows an injured Coen in the modern world, pursued by an unknown entity. It raises new questions rather than answering them, and the outcome of this cutscene stays the same regardless of the other endings you chase, even one where Brencis is defeated.
