Araketa in Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, Explained

What the new pack-hunting Bird Wyvern does, where it lives, and what you need to hunt it.

What the new pack-hunting Bird Wyvern does, where it lives, and what you need to hunt it.

Araketa is the first new large monster Capcom has shown for Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, and it fights the way a flock does. It is a Bird Wyvern built for sustained high-speed flight, and it does not travel or attack alone.

Quick answer: Araketa is a pack-hunting Bird Wyvern that flies at high speed using powerful air currents released from its wings, with pack leaders emitting distinctive calls to direct the rest of the group. It appears in the Skybound Eyrie, the floating locale added by Ascendance, which launches in 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.

Araketa behavior and abilities

Two traits define the fight. The first is mobility. Araketa controls strong air currents pushed out from its wings, which lets it cover long distances quickly and close on a hunter from above rather than charging along the ground. The second is coordination. Leaders within a pack use distinct calls to command the other members, so the group moves as a unit instead of attacking one at a time.

That combination is what makes it different from the aerial monsters already in the base game. Diving attacks arrive from several angles, and the leader’s calls are the audio cue that the pattern is about to change.

The Skybound Eyrie, where Araketa lives

The Skybound Eyrie is a new locale made up of islands floating high above the clouds, dotted with ancient ruins and endemic life that has not been catalogued before. It becomes reachable in the story once the mist covering Wyveria’s skies clears.

Getting around it is vertical work. Hunters use their Seikret to catch updrafts and glide between the broken landmasses, which is also how you keep pace with a monster that can simply leave the island you are standing on.

The other monsters revealed with Araketa

Araketa was not shown on its own. Gundoraja is a newly discovered Elder Dragon with a massive serpentine body that emerges from the darkest clouds over the Skybound Eyrie and can bend storms to its will. The expansion’s story also opens with the colossal Lao-Shan Lung arriving in the Forbidden Lands, an event that pushes the Expedition Team to build Madoi Stronghold in preparation for its return. Kushala Daora is among the returning Elder Dragons.

Alongside those threats, hunters will run into Guardian Monsters whose habitats have expanded and other ecological abnormalities tied to Lao-Shan Lung’s arrival. Nata, now a full member of the Expedition Team, guides the investigation with his Wudwud partner Bangard.

Boost Bracer options against aerial packs

The Boost Bracer is new equipment that hooks into the hunter’s Slinger. Activating it temporarily raises your combat capability and plays to the strengths of whichever of the 14 weapon types you are carrying, adding attacks, combos, and movement options for the duration.

The intended loop is to use the Boost Driver ability to create an opening, then push your advantage while the temporary Boost is active. Capcom has said more weapon-specific Boost Actions and further gameplay mechanics will be detailed before launch, so the current picture is only the first slice of the system.

What you need before you can hunt Araketa

Own the base Monster Hunter Wilds. The expansion is add-on content and will not run standalone.
Reach Hunter Rank 40. This is the rank gate on entering the expansion’s content.
Complete the 7★ quest “Awaking From a Dream.” Finishing it is what lets you start the Ascendance story and enter Master Rank once the expansion is out.

You will know the requirements are met when your Hunter Rank reads 40 or higher and “Awaking From a Dream” shows as completed in your quest log. If you have not started the base game yet, the free Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo on PlayStation Store lets you build a Hunter and Palico, try all 14 weapons, and carry that save data into the full game.

Monster Hunter Wilds is out now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, with a Switch 2 version in development. Ascendance arrives in 2027, and no narrower release date has been confirmed. Expect Araketa’s move set and hunting patterns to be filled in as Capcom rolls out more weapon and mechanic details ahead of launch.
