Chance Encounters are the optional side missions scattered across Kyoto in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. There are 18 in total, and each one appears as a Notebook icon on the map. You start a Chance Encounter by walking to that marker and speaking with the person standing there. Clearing all 18 unlocks the No Job Too Small trophy and achievement.
Quick answer: Progress the main story to make each batch of Notebook icons appear, then talk to the marked NPC to begin the mission. Finish all 18 before the Point of No Return ahead of the final mission, “The Clash At Rendaino,” to earn No Job Too Small.
All 18 Chance Encounters and when they unlock
Chance Encounters do not all appear at once. New ones open up as you complete specific story missions, so you can only reach them once the game has moved you far enough forward. The table below lists every encounter in order alongside the exact mission that makes it available.

Note: Several encounters also feed into other collectible goals. Completing Pale Lights in a Night Sky, Clear Space, Clear Mind, An Ugly Business, The Growling Ghost, Noisy Neighbors, The Odd Couples, A Fishy Story, and Restless Spirits each rewards a Charm, so clearing every Chance Encounter also contributes to the Charmed Life trophy.
Hidden Treasure Chance Encounters (No. 1 to No. 5)
Five of the Chance Encounters are Hidden Treasure hunts, and they are the hardest to finish. Each one begins when an NPC hands you an Old Drawing that looks like a photograph. The picture points to where the treasure is buried, and the map marker only shows the rough area, not the exact spot. Once you reach the right location, use the Oni Eyes to reveal the treasure.
Hidden Treasure No. 1 – Kiyomizu-zaka Slope
The first hunt sits near the Kiyomizu-zaka Slope Spirit Mirror. The X mark on the drawing is actually on a nearby rooftop. Head into the alley close by and climb the long ladder onto the first roof, then take the second, smaller ladder to go higher. On the top roof, use the Oni Eyes to uncover the treasure.
Hidden Treasure No. 2 – Yasaka Pagoda waterfall
This one is close to the tall Yasaka Pagoda and its Spirit Mirror. The drawing shows the pagoda, a ladder, and a waterfall. Zoom in on the map and the ladders become visible, which is the quickest way in. Otherwise, follow the nearby stream until it becomes a waterfall, then use the Oni Eyes at the base of the small waterfall.
Hidden Treasure No. 3 – temple near Kamo River
The picture shows an X on a gate beside a tall wall, and you need to search from inside the wall. The marker leads you toward the Kamo River – East Spirit Mirror, and the large Genma-infested temple nearby is the target. Enter through the main door just east of the Spirit Mirror, turn right immediately, walk up to the large closed door, and use the Oni Eyes there.
Hidden Treasure No. 4 – shrine past Gojo Street
The fourth treasure lies past the Gojo Street – East Spirit Mirror, in an area that is almost always crawling with Genma. Look for the single small shrine-like building in the northeast, and take the long southern route around to reach it. Instead of going inside, move to the left side of the building where a small balcony overlooks Eastern Kyoto, then use the Oni Eyes.
Hidden Treasure No. 5 – top of Yasaka Pagoda
The final treasure is the easiest to reach. Go to Yasaka Pagoda and climb it. Inside, a series of ladders takes you all the way up to the upper rooftop. Clear out the Genma waiting at the top, then use the Oni Eyes on the upper level of the pagoda, along its southern side, to find the treasure.
How to confirm all 18 are complete
You know a Chance Encounter is done when its Notebook icon disappears from the map and its reward, such as a Charm or Power Stones, lands in your inventory. Once all 18 are cleared, the No Job Too Small trophy and achievement pops.
If an encounter is not showing up, the most common reason is that you have not yet finished the story mission that unlocks it. Check the availability column above and keep advancing the main quest until the missing Notebook icon appears. You can free-roam and collect everything up until the Point of No Return before “The Clash At Rendaino,” so keep a manual save at that point if you want to return and clean up any encounters you missed.
