The Blood of Dawnwalker: How to Open the Sturdy Door in The Highland Grove

The locked stone door in the mountain ruins needs the Scholar's Key, and only one body in Vale Sangora is carrying it.

The locked stone door in the mountain ruins needs the Scholar’s Key, and only one body in Vale Sangora is carrying it.

The sturdy door sits at the back of a stone cave structure in the mountains of Vale Sangora, and it does not respond to lockpicking, force, or any vampiric ability. It is a keyed door, and the key belongs to someone who never made it inside.

Quick answer: Inspect the crushed skeleton at the landslide site during The Highland Grove to pick up the Scholar’s Key, then carry it to the ruins and interact with the sturdy door to unlock it.

What the Scholar’s Key is and where it comes from

The Highland Grove runs on a simple chain. The quest asks you to find out who tried to reach the ruins before you, and answering that question is what hands you the key. A scholar was caught in a rockslide on the way up, and the landslide buried them along with everything they were carrying.

Searching the remains gives you three items at once, and all three come from the same interaction.

Get the key at the landslide site

Open the map and track the “Inspect the landslide site” objective. The search zone appears as a highlighted area in the mountainous stretch of Vale Sangora, so you have a marker to run toward rather than a precise pin.

Climb down the rocky slope into the collapsed section. The site is a wide scatter of loose stone and debris, and the point of interest sits at the bottom of the slide rather than at the top edge.

Find the skeleton crushed under the fallen rock and interact with it. This single inspection drops the Tattered Journal, the Scholar’s Map, and the Scholar’s Key into your inventory and closes out the “find out who tried to get to the ruins before” objective.

Note: The quest tracker switching to “Open the sturdy door” is your confirmation that the key registered. If that objective has not appeared, the skeleton has not been inspected yet.

Reach the ruins and unlock the door

Follow the new marker across the mountain terrain. It is a long overland run through rocky ground, and there is no shortcut that skips the trek, so keep the objective tracked while you climb.

Enter the stone cave structure at the marker. The passage runs straight back to a single locked door, so there is no branching path or hidden lever to hunt for inside.
Interact with the sturdy door. With the Scholar’s Key in your inventory, the prompt uses it automatically and the door swings open into the sealed chamber.

Chest rewards behind the sturdy door

The chamber holds one chest, and looting it completes The Highland Grove. All three rewards come out of that single container.

Why the sturdy door won’t open

There is only one real failure point here, and it is almost always the same one. Walking to the ruins first, before touching the landslide, leaves you standing at a door with no way through, because nothing in the ruins grants the key.

  • You reached the ruins without inspecting the skeleton, so the Scholar’s Key is still buried under the rockslide.
  • You reached the landslide area but interacted with the wrong debris. The key only comes from the crushed skeleton itself.
  • The tracked objective still reads “Inspect the landslide site” rather than “Open the sturdy door,” which means the earlier step has not registered.

If any of those apply, backtrack to the slide, inspect the body, and the door becomes a formality. The whole chain is short enough that it costs very little of your in-game clock, which matters more than usual in a game where time is spent like currency.
