All Hidden Treasure Locations in Onimusha: Way of the Sword (All 5 Treasures)

The Hidden Treasure Chance Encounters in Onimusha: Way of the Sword are the fiddliest side content in the game, because the map marker you get never points at the actual chest. An NPC hands you an Old Drawing, the drawing shows a rough picture with an X on it, and the marker on your map covers a general area rather than a pinpoint. Five of these quests exist in total, all in Eastern Kyoto.

Quick answer: Walk to the exact spot pictured in the Old Drawing and trigger Oni Eyes. The buried chest only materializes if you are standing in the right place, so if nothing appears, move a few steps and try again rather than assuming you are in the wrong district.

How Hidden Treasure Chance Encounters work

Each quest starts the same way. You accept the encounter, receive an Old Drawing, and the drawing carries both an image and a short riddle on the reverse. Old Drawing No. 1 reads “At the top of Kiyomizu-zaka Slope.” Old Drawing No. 2 points you toward “Where the Buddhas overlook the flow.” Old Drawing No. 3 says “At the temple where dragons soar.”

The chests are invisible until you use Oni Eyes on the correct tile. When you are close enough, Musashi’s gauntlet lights up. Trigger the ability there and the chest surfaces out of the ground for you to open normally. Buying Oni Vision: Treasures, Oni Vision: Treasures 2, and Oni Vision: Search Range at a Spirit Mirror before you start hunting makes all of this far quicker, since nearby loot then lights up through walls when you hold L2/LT and tap R2/RT.

Note: Chance Encounters do not carry into New Game+. If you care about the No Job Too Small trophy, finish all 18 of them, Hidden Treasures included, during your first playthrough.

The two climbs: Hidden Treasure 1 and Hidden Treasure 5

Two of the five chests sit on roofs, and both are easy to walk past at ground level because the drawing’s X sits above your eyeline.

Hidden Treasure No. 1 location (Kiyomizu-zaka Slope)

Fast travel to the Kiyomizu-zaka Slope Spirit Mirror and head up to the top of the slope. The marked area is small, but the treasure is not on the street itself.

Find the alley nearby with a long ladder. Climb it to reach the first roof, then take the second, shorter ladder to climb again.

Walk along the highest roof ridge until the gauntlet glows, then use Oni Eyes. The chest holds a silk cloth equipment material and two Oni Stones.

Hidden Treasure No. 5 location (Yasaka Pagoda rooftop)

Travel to Yasaka Pagoda and go inside rather than circling the base. The interior is a stack of ladders that leads all the way up.

Keep climbing until you pop out onto the upper rooftop. A few Genma are waiting there, so clear them before you start hunting for the spot.

Move to the southern side of that upper level and use Oni Eyes to surface the chest. This is the most straightforward of the five once you know the pagoda can be climbed from within.

Hidden Treasure No. 2 location (waterfall near Yasaka Pagoda)

The second drawing is blurry, but three landmarks are visible in it: the pagoda, a ladder, and a waterfall. That combination narrows the search to the stream running north of Yasaka Pagoda.

Open the map and zoom in far enough that ladders become visible as icons. The ladder next to the waterfall is the fastest way to confirm you are heading to the right stretch of water.

If you would rather navigate by terrain, follow the nearby stream north until it drops into a small waterfall.

Stand at the foot of the waterfall, right beside the ladder, and use Oni Eyes. The chest contains a silk cloth material and two Oni Stones.

Hidden Treasure No. 3 location (temple courtyard near Kamo River – East)

The third drawing shows an X on a gate set into a tall wall, which is the part that trips people up. Eastern Kyoto has only a handful of walls like that, and the chest is on the inside, not out on the street where you first spot the gate.

Head to the Kamo River – East Spirit Mirror. The large temple next to it, the one crawling with Genma, is the target.

Go through the main door just east of the Spirit Mirror and step into the courtyard. Expect resistance here, so deal with the Genma before you start scanning.

Once inside, turn right immediately and walk to the large closed gate. Approach it and trigger Oni Eyes to reveal the chest, which holds a silk cloth material and two Power Stones.

Hidden Treasure No. 4 location (shrine balcony past Gojo Street – East)

This is the most annoying of the five. It sits beyond the Gojo Street – East Spirit Mirror in an area that is almost permanently occupied by Genma, and the direct approach does not connect.

Look at the map for the single small shrine-like building in the northeast corner of the area. That building is the landmark.

Take the long southern route around the area to reach it. There is no shortcut, so plan for a fight or two on the way.

Skip the interior. Move around to the left side of the building, where a small balcony looks out over Eastern Kyoto, and use Oni Eyes there.

How to tell it worked, and why it sometimes does not

Confirmation is immediate. The gauntlet glows first, the chest rises into view when you use the ability, and opening it hands over the Oni Treasure along with the upgrade materials. The associated Chance Encounter then closes out and stops appearing in your tracked objectives.

When nothing happens, the cause is almost always one of these.

You are near the marker but not on the spot. The marker is deliberately imprecise and covers a general area, not the chest tile.
You are on the wrong side of a wall or on the ground instead of the roof. Treasures 1, 3, and 5 all require getting above or behind something.
You have not bought the Oni Vision skills yet, so nothing highlights as you walk past it.
Genma are still active nearby and interrupting the ability before it resolves.

All five chests remain reachable right up until you accept “The Clash at Rendaino,” which permanently locks free roam. Clear the Hidden Treasures before that point, or use Continue from the main menu after the credits to drop back in just before the finale with your progress intact.
