Blood of Dawnwalker: How Perfect Block and Perfect Riposte Work

The exact timing, inputs, and skill unlocks behind stamina-free blocks and critical ripostes in The Blood of Dawnwalker.

The exact timing, inputs, and skill unlocks behind stamina-free blocks and critical ripostes in The Blood of Dawnwalker.

Perfect Block and Perfect Riposte are the two defensive tools that make combat in The Blood of Dawnwalker click. A Perfect Block stops an incoming attack without draining your stamina, and a Perfect Riposte turns that opening into a guaranteed critical hit. Both run off the same directional inputs you already use to guard, so the difference comes down to timing and one skill unlock.

Quick answer: Press a directional Block in the correct direction just before an attack lands to Perfect Block it. Then, with the Perfect Riposte perk unlocked, attack in the red Critical Direction shown on your lock-on HUD to deal critical damage.

How to Perfect Block an attack

A Perfect Block is a directional Block performed at the last moment before an enemy’s swing connects. Match the direction of the incoming attack and time the press correctly, and Coen parries the strike, taking no damage and spending no stamina. Missing the timing turns it into a normal block or an outright hit.

The cue depends on your difficulty setting. On Story, Fair, and Challenging, the shield icon on the targeted enemy shifts colour to signal the window. On Duelist, that prompt is gone, and you have to read the attacker’s body movement instead.

DifficultyPerfect Block cue
Story, Fair, ChallengingShield icon turns from yellow to orange; press the correct directional Block during this window
DuelistNo shield indicator; time the block by watching the attacker’s animation

Note: Attacks marked with a red skull indicator cannot be blocked at all, including with a Perfect Block. Those can only be dodged.

The stagger window after a Perfect Block

Landing a Perfect Block leaves the attacker off balance for a brief moment. Any attack you throw during that window is guaranteed to hit. This opening is what the Perfect Riposte perk builds on, but even without the perk, it is free damage you should take every time.

Unlocking Perfect Riposte in the Swordsmastery tree

Perfect Riposte is a Swordsmastery ability, and it is not active by default. You unlock it in the skill tree, where it sits behind the Omniblock perk. Once learned, it lets you attack in the Critical Direction after a Perfect Block to deal critical damage. Because Swordsmastery works in both human and Vrakhir forms, the perk stays useful across the full day and night cycle.

Tier 3Perfect Riposte can be used after a Perfect Dodge1 Skill Point, 1 Time Segment

Tiers 1 and 2 are available right from the start of the game. Tiers 3 and 4 are gated behind Perfect Riposte Manuals. These Superior-rarity books are bought from the Swordmaster teacher Ursul, who becomes a vendor after you rescue him during the Ambrus’s Prisoners: Lucky Crossing quest.

How to perform a Perfect Riposte

Land a Perfect Block against an incoming attack. If you own Tier 3 of the perk, a Perfect Dodge works the same way.
Look at the lock-on HUD. A red indicator appears pointing to a single direction, the Critical Direction.
Attack in that direction. If the strike lands, it counts as a Perfect Riposte and deals critical damage. You know it worked when the hit registers as a critical against the staggered enemy.

Landing Perfect Riposte against multiple enemies

Reading the Critical Direction is manageable one-on-one, but crowded fights make it hard to track. In those moments, the omniattack (a random-direction attack) is often the better call. The Perfect Riposte window stays open for a few seconds, so a fast weapon can land two or three hits inside it. With that many swings, you will often trigger the riposte by chance while auto-attacking.

Even if the critical never lands, three regular hits during that window deal damage comparable to, or greater than, a single Perfect Riposte critical, provided you have the stamina to spend. That makes the omniattack a reliable fallback when precise directional input is too much to manage.
