Evolutions decide how a Clash Royale deck actually performs, and with 42 of them in the game as of September 2026, the choice matters more than ever. Evolution Shards come in slowly, so you cannot afford every upgrade. The fastest way to spend well is to start with the Evolution that gives value in the widest range of decks.
Quick answer: Evo Elite Barbarians is the strongest Evolution right now. Upgrade it first, then move to Evo Royal Hogs, Evo Tesla, Evo Mortar, and Evo Battle Ram before touching anything below S-tier.

Why Evo Elite Barbarians is the top pick
Evo Elite Barbarians throw Rage-tipped Spears at ground targets 3.5 to 5 tiles away. Those spears clear low-HP troops from a distance and leave a Rage trail that speeds up the Barbarians and any friendly troops nearby. With even light support they can take down towers and hard-counter heavy threats like Mega Knight, Mini P.E.K.K.A., and Prince.
Two things push this Evolution ahead of the field. It takes only one cycle to evolve, so you get it into the match quickly, and it slots into a huge spread of decks including Golem, Rune Giant, and Boss Bandit. You can also split the pair between lanes to pressure both sides at once. That combination of speed, flexibility, and damage is why it belongs at the top.

The rest of the S-tier Evolutions
Evo Royal Hogs
The strongest win condition in the game right now. The Hogs fly in and deal landing damage when they hit the ground, either by taking damage or reaching a building. That flying mechanic makes them awkward to stop with swarms and ground troops that cannot hit air. Split them across both lanes to keep the pressure constant.
Evo Tesla
The best defensive building available. Each time it resurfaces, it sends out an electric shockwave that stuns troops within a six-tile radius. It fits cleanly into Goblin Drill Bomber, X-Bow Tesla, and Miner Control.
Evo Mortar
Every shell drops a Goblin that also deals splash damage. Once it connects to a tower, the opponent has to answer both the Goblins and the Mortar at once. After chipping the tower, you can pull it back for defense. It anchors the Mortar Bait deck, one of the most punishing lists in the current meta.
Evo Battle Ram
The Ram knocks troops out of its path and wipes Skeletons and other low-HP units before it reaches the tower. Place it behind a Lumberjack or Giant Skeleton and it deals serious damage. It has been a staple since the Giant Skeleton Hero Wizard deck rose to the top last season.

Strong A-tier Evolutions worth targeting next
Once your S-tier picks are covered, the A-tier Evolutions are the safest follow-up investments because they work across several archetypes.
- Evo Giant Snowball pulls enemy troops together, rolls them back, and slows them, which can shut down an entire push. It shines in Goblin Drill Bomber and Giant Graveyard.
- Evo Skeleton Barrel spawns two barrels instead of one and slots into nearly every Bait deck. It also defends well and can fully counter Three Musketeers.
- Evo Inferno Dragon keeps its high beam damage after a kill, letting it melt through unsupported troops. It is central to LavaLoon lists.
- Evo Cannon fires across a large radius and knocks troops back, clearing low-HP units like Dart Goblin and Princess.
- Evo Zap casts two Zaps for only two Elixir, with the second one covering a larger radius, dealing full damage, and stunning.
- Evo Goblin Cage pulls ground troops in before releasing the Goblin Brawler, handling Giants, Mega Knight, and even P.E.K.K.A.
How to spend Evolution Shards wisely
Since Shards are limited, the goal is not to chase every upgrade but to prioritize Evolutions that fit decks you actually play.

Note: Tiers shift with every balance patch. Cards like Evo Furnace and Evo Wall Breakers dropped after HP and area-damage nerfs, so keep an eye on patch notes before committing Shards to anything on the edge of the meta.
Evolutions to skip for now
The bottom tiers are held back by repeated nerfs or by better alternatives filling the same slot. Evo Mega Knight lost most of its threat after its uppercut frequency was reduced, and it still costs a full seven Elixir. Evo P.E.K.K.A. no longer heals enough per kill to justify a slow seven-Elixir tank. Evo Witch now only heals from her first wave of Skeletons, and Evo Barbarians fold to any swarm, splash troop, or building. Evo Ice Spirit took a hard hit from the Season 86 Spirit nerfs and can no longer reach the tower on its own.
The short version: stays simple. If you can only upgrade one Evolution, make it Evo Elite Barbarians, then work down the S-tier list into the A-tier cards that match how you already play.
