The Mutation Consumable is the only reliable way to force the Fractured mutation onto an egg in Steal An Egg. It is a purple crystal item sold in the Boss Shop, it is spent the moment you use it, and it only works on an egg that is sitting in your base waiting to hatch. Get the order wrong and the item is gone with nothing to show for it.
Quick answer: Buy the 10% Mutation Consumable for 400 Boss Tokens in the Boss Shop, place an unhatched egg in your base, equip the consumable, stand next to the egg, and hold E (or tap the interact button on mobile) at the “Apply Mutation” prompt. Each use has a 10% chance to apply Fractured.
Mutation Consumable cost, source, and success rate
Everything that matters about the item fits in one place. Note that the shop label itself reads “10% Mutation Consumable,” and the 10% refers to the chance the mutation actually sticks.
| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Shop name | 10% Mutation Consumable |
| Price | 400 Boss Tokens |
| Where to buy | Boss Shop |
| Token source | Defeating the Abyss Overlord in a Rift |
| Valid target | A placed egg that has not hatched yet |
| Success chance | 10% per use |
| On failure | The item is consumed, the egg is unchanged |
| Mutation applied | Fractured |
Boss Tokens only come from the Rift boss. Enter the portal when a Rift spawns, clear the Abyss Overlord, and you should walk away with enough tokens for roughly three consumables per successful clear.

How to tell whether the mutation worked
A failed attempt throws up a notification reading “The consumable fizzled…” and the crystal disappears from your inventory. The egg keeps its normal appearance and its hatch timer carries on untouched.
A success applies Fractured to that egg, so the pet inside hatches with the mutation attached. Fractured is one of the stronger income multipliers in the game, landing at roughly 2.75x on top of whatever the pet’s size already earns. It cannot be rolled from a normal hatch at all, which is the whole reason the consumable exists.

Why the Apply Mutation prompt does not trigger
There are only a few reasons the interaction refuses to fire, and none of them are bugs.
- You are standing too far away. The game pushes a “Get closer to the egg” message until you are inside the interaction range.
- The consumable is not equipped. It has to be the item in your hands, not just sitting in the inventory.
- The egg is still being carried or has not been set down inside your base.
- The egg already hatched. Once a pet is out, the window has closed for that egg.

What 10% actually costs you in Boss Tokens
A 10% chance means nine out of ten crystals are going to fizzle, and each one still costs 400 Boss Tokens. Stacking attempts is the only way to close the gap. Around 88 uses gets you to a 99.99% chance of at least one Fractured, which is a useful reminder that this is a long grind rather than a one-and-done purchase.
You can keep throwing consumables at the same egg. If one fizzles, equip another and hold E again, as long as the egg has not finished hatching. That pushes a decision on you, since a long hatch timer gives you more attempts than a quick one.
Tip: Save the crystals for eggs you would be happy to keep even without a mutation. A Fractured roll on a weak pet multiplies a small number, while the same roll on a rare or high-tier egg is where the 400-token price starts paying for itself.

One last naming note, because it trips people up. Searches for a “Mutation Shard” almost always point back to this same purple crystal. There is no separate shard item, and the consumable is also unrelated to Sakura Crystals, which feed the Sakura Incubator and its Bloom and Spirit Bloom mutations. If you are chasing Fractured, the Boss Shop is the only counter that sells what you need.
